View dealThe Renault Austral is a five-seat family SUV measuring 4.53 metres long, sold in the UK with a single powertrain: a 197 bhp self-charging hybrid driving the front wheels through an automatic gearbox. No plug, no manual, no diesel.
It sits in the heart of Renault's range, above the smaller crossovers and below the larger, more style-led models, aimed squarely at families who want a petrol-electric SUV without changing how they refuel.
The choice is simple: one body, one powertrain, and three trims - Techno, Techno Esprit Alpine and Iconic Esprit Alpine.

The current Austral is Renault's mainstream family SUV: five seats, five doors, 4.53 m long on a 2.67 m wheelbase, and covered by a three-year or 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty.
Reviewers consistently praise the efficiency - a WLTP figure of 58.9 mpg is strong for a petrol-electric SUV of this size - along with the quality of the cabin. The common criticisms are engine noise when you work it hard, and rivals that offer a more flexible boot.
It is a far more convincing effort, with a 55-litre tank and a genuinely useful real-world touring range between fill-ups.
Because the standard kit list is unusually full and the same on every trim. Every Austral has matrix LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and start, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging and dual-zone climate control.
Safety and assistance are comprehensive across the range: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam and a rear-view camera, plus front, rear and side parking sensors.
For family duty, it seats five, carries 75 kg on the roof rails and will tow up to 1,500 kg braked (750 kg unbraked). The turning circle is 11.4 m, which helps in car parks more than the 1.84 m width suggests.
There's only one, so the decision is really whether a self-charging hybrid suits how you drive. If you can't charge at home and don't want to start, it almost certainly does.
A 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine works with a 2 kWh battery for 197 bhp and 205 Nm, driving the front wheels through an automatic gearbox. It never needs plugging in - the battery tops itself up on the move - and returns 58.9 mpg WLTP with CO2 of 107-108 g/km.
Performance is adequate rather than rapid: 0-62 mph in 8.4 seconds and 111 mph. It's at its best in town and on steady A-roads, where it runs on electricity often. Insurance falls in group 23-24 depending on version.
| Hybrid | |

| Power | 197 bhp |

| Battery | 2 kWh |

All three share the same 197 bhp hybrid and front-wheel drive, so you're choosing wheels, seat comfort and cabin technology, not performance.
The starting point, on 19-inch Komah alloy wheels with cloth upholstery, a synthetic leather steering wheel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital rear-view camera and front, rear and side parking sensors. Nothing feels stripped out.
The Techno is currently available from £328.27 a month.
Adds 20-inch Altitude alloys, an Alpine-inspired sport steering wheel in synthetic leather and alcantara with triple topstitching, a heated steering wheel, a 9.3-inch head-up display and intelligent contextual adaptive cruise control. It also brings heated and massaging front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat and a hands-free tailgate.
The Techno Esprit Alpine is currently available from £335.93 a month. Against the Techno, that is currently £7.66/mo more expensive.
Adds an opening panoramic sunroof, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and a 3D 360-degree surround camera, along with self-steering parking. Wheels stay at 20-inch Altitude alloys, so this one is about light, sound and parking confidence.
The Iconic Esprit Alpine is currently available from £353.11 a month. Against the Techno Esprit Alpine, that is currently £17.18/mo more expensive.
One practical note from our team: if you regularly use tight multi-storey car parks, the surround camera earns its keep on 20-inch wheels. Our guide to choosing your spec, mileage and term is worth five minutes before you order.
If you're weighing up the class, the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson are the obvious hybrid family SUVs, the KGM Actyon takes a value-led approach, and the Renault Rafale is the sleeker option on the Renault range page.
