LEASING A SUZUKI

The Suzuki Motor Corporation is perhaps one of the world’s most diverse automobile manufacturers. It develops and manufactures engines for cars, trucks, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and more.

A Bit About Suzuki

Suzuki is one of the top ten manufacturers of automobiles worldwide. The Japanese multinational corporation manufactures automobiles, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), outboard marine engines and wheelchairs.

Suzuki’s philosophy is “the future is bright because they've always made products that people want in their lives, and that's never going to change”

Formed as a family company by Michio Suzuki in 1909, manufacturing weaving looms during the boom times of the Japanese Silk industry; by the 1930s, Suzuki wishing to diversify the business, took an interest in producing a small motor vehicle.

After various prototypes, the project was abandoned due to the onset of World War Two. Post-war, Suzuki continued with the loom business; however, the market collapsed in 1951, and Suzuki returned to the original project of producing motorised vehicles.

Japanese people now needed affordable, reliable personal transportation. Suzuki produced the “Power Free” 36 ccs -1 horsepower two-stroke engine-assisted pedal bike. This was a turning point; by 1954, the business produced 6,000 motor bicycles a month and changed its name to Suzuki Motor Company Limited.

To comply with the Kei Class (small car) car legislation introduced by the Japanese government, which restricted size, engine capacity and power output, Suzuki produced its first car, the Suzulight SF; SF stood for Suzuki 4-wheel car.

This little car was 117 inches long and 51 centimetres wide, with a transverse, two cylinders, 2 stroke engine, drum brakes all around and rack and pinion steering, a feature far ahead of its time. Suzuki SF fitted nicely into the people’s car programme, a recently announced Japanese ministry Transport incentive.

The Suzulight series of cars was launched in 1955 with three models, a saloon (SS), a light van (SL) and a pickup (SP). Suzuki used the Suzulight brand until 1967. The final car to use the name was the Fronte LC10, replaced by the Suzuki Fronte 800, which was to become the Suzuki Alto in the 1980s.

Kei Class

The Japanese government created the Kei car category in 1949, and the regulations have been revised several times. These regulations specify a maximum vehicle size, engine capacity, and power output so owners can enjoy tax and insurance benefits.

Suzuki Jimny

In the mid-1960s, Suzuki intended to build a Kei class off-road vehicle, and an opportunity arose to buy the Hope Motor Company, which had been working on a 4-wheel drive concept, the Hopestar ON360. Suzuki rebranded this as the LJ 10, which was introduced in 1970.

This rugged, genuine 4-wheel drive vehicle sold 2.85 million units across 194 countries. Now in its fourth generation, it's been known as the Chevrolet Samurai, the Maruti Gypsy Suzuki Samurai, Suzuki Santana and even the Suzuki Fox in Iceland.

The Jimny was designed to fit into government regulations; unfortunately, 50 years later, it fell foul in Europe of government regulations.

Due to its CO2 emissions and tightening EU standards, the well-loved Jimny had to be withdrawn from European sales in 2020.

The JB64 is now assembled in India and made solely for African and Middle Eastern export markets.

Cappuccino

The Suzuki Cappuccino was a small 2 door two-seater sports car with a detachable hard top. It was made between 1991 and 1998 and designed to Kei class specifications. Weighing only 720 kg, the Cappuccino was powered by a turbocharged 3-cylinder 657cc DOHC engine.

Enjoying a cult status, it was only available in the United Kingdom from 1992 onwards, initially struggling to get British national type approval. Launched at the British international motor show, it was awarded the best sports car under £20,000 at the show in October 1993.

In Japan and the tight import quota of Japanese products in the UK, only 1,110 cars were registered between 1993 and 95.

Suzuki made a revised version of the car in 1995 (EA21R); however, due to the EU Commission’s stricter emissions controls, Japan's board decided not to proceed with the European market; any unsold cars were registered on the 30th of September 1995.
