A Bit About Jeep

Go anywhere. Do anything. ®

Jeep® is an American automobile brand currently owned by the multinational corporation Stellantis. Jeep is a speciality brand whose range consists solely of sports utility vehicles (SUV), both crossover and full off-road SUVs.

Born for battle, the general-purpose vehicle or “GP” emerged as a hero to thousands of allied soldiers during the Second World War; these vehicles built in the 1940s firmly established the Jeep brand as an undisputed leader in 4x 4 technology.

In June 1940, with World War Two on the horizon, the US army solicited bids from 135 automakers for a 1/4 tonne light reconnaissance vehicle tailored to army specifications; only three companies responded: Bantam, Willys and Ford. They collectively produced the template for the vehicle known worldwide as the Jeep.

The 1941 Willys MA, known as the “Quad” because of its 4x4 drive, featured a gear stick on the steering column, low-side body cut-outs, a minimalist instrument cluster on the dashboard, and a handbrake on the left-hand side.

After arduous testing Willys Overland was awarded the contract; it’s now the stuff of legend. The rugged, simple Jeep 4 x4 became the Gi’s best friend, second only to his rifle. Scripps Howard WW 2 reporter Ernie Pyle reported, “it did everything, it went everywhere, as faithful as a dog, as strong as a mule and as agile as a goat constantly carried twice what it was designed for and still kept going”.

Post-war The Jeep brand has had many owners since Willis-Overland it was acquired by Kaiser motors in the 50s, eventually merging into AMC, the American Motors Corporation and finally from the late 80s by Chrysler Group until its current owners bought the brand in 2021.

Despite its varied ownership, Jeep continued to define its purpose and has rewritten its own history, coining the term SUV and also trailblazing with the revolutionary SUVs like the CJ, the first civilian Jeeps post-war, and the full-size Jeeps like the SJ Waggoner, Cherokee, Pickups, Gladiator Series, and the Dispatcher Jeep used by the US Postal Service in the 1960s.

Jeep has been ahead of the curve with SUVs; it’s been steadily developing off-road technology, and in the mid-1980s, the Wrangler and a redesigned Cherokee were introduced, creating an enthusiastic following.

The difference between SUV and 4x4

The words SUV, Compact SUV and 4X4 are often grouped into one; what are the differences? SUVs and compact SUVs have different frames and construction and have much less to do with their capability.

SUV is built upon a broader and longer frame, offers high ground clearance, and increases overall size. The Compact SUV is typically smaller and built on a car-based frame and a taller design to give you a spacious interior.

4x4 is a term used to describe a vehicle with a system that mechanically engages all four wheels simultaneously.

SUV or a Compact SUV and 4 x4 all offer superior off-road capability compared to standard cars; an elevated driving increased position gives better vision and safety and will guarantee a comfortable ride on or off-road; these qualities are that Jeep has represented in the past, and the present and into the future.

The two-litre 272 BHP turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine on the Jeep Wrangler is available with engine stop-start and 8-speed transmission.
