The Mercedes-Benz GLC is a five-seat premium SUV, and the SUV counterpart to the C-Class. It sits in the middle of the Mercedes-Benz SUV line-up: bigger inside than the small crossovers below it, easier to place on a British road than the large models above it.

It suits families and business drivers who want comfort and a quiet cabin more than sharp handling. Road testers consistently describe it as handsome, refined and relaxing, with a big central touchscreen, and they're less keen on the firm ride some versions serve up.

About the Mercedes-Benz GLC

The GLC is Mercedes-Benz's mid-size family SUV: five seats, five doors, about 4.72 metres long, and a boot of 470 to 620 litres depending on which version you pick. Every one is automatic and all-wheel drive.

Reviewers return to the same points. The cabin looks and feels expensive, the motorway refinement is a genuine strength, and rear passenger space is good for adults. Ride comfort divides opinion, particularly on the larger wheels.

It's a serious tow car too, with braked towing up to 2,500 kg on the diesel. Mercedes-Benz covers it with a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, and Euro NCAP awarded the current GLC five stars.

Why lease a Mercedes-Benz GLC?

Because the standard specification is already generous, which matters on a lease: you're choosing a car for two, three or four years, not building one to keep. Every GLC gets built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Also standard across the range: wireless phone charging, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, roof rails and power-folding mirrors.

The safety kit is thorough. Autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, automatic high beam, front and rear parking sensors and self-steering parking assist are fitted to every version. Euro NCAP scored the GLC 92% for adult occupant protection and 84% for safety assist.

Which GLC powertrain is right for me?

Three choices, and mileage decides it: Plug-in hybrid if you can charge at home, Diesel if you cover long distances, Petrol if you want the AMG performance versions. All three are automatic with all-wheel drive.

Petrol

The Petrol GLC runs from 255 to 443 bhp, all automatic and all-wheel drive. Nothing to plug in. Official economy of 28.8 to 38.7 mpg reflects what these engines are for - pace and smoothness - and the boot stays at its full 620 litres with the seats up.

Diesel

The 2-litre diesel gives 194 to 265 bhp and WLTP economy of 49.6 to 53.3 mpg, so it's the long-distance pick. It also tows the most: 2,500 kg braked. No charging, an automatic gearbox, and 620 litres of boot space behind the rear seats.

Plug-in hybrid

A 2-litre turbo petrol plus a 25.3 kWh battery, producing 309 to 328 bhp. It needs charging to make sense - at 11 kW the best version refills from 0-100% in 2.8 hours. The battery costs you boot space, at 470 litres, and towing drops to 2,000 kg braked.

Which GLC trim should I choose?

Two everyday trims cover most customers, then three AMG performance versions sit above them. Here's what separates them.

AMG Line

The starting point, on the 194 bhp diesel. It brings 19-inch AMG 5 Spoke alloys in black with a high-sheen finish, hard disc navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Artico man-made leather, heated front seats, seat memory, sports suspension and front sports seats. A fixed towbar is available as an option.

The AMG Line is currently available from £766.88 a month.

Urban Edition

A Plug-in hybrid trim from 309 bhp, and largely about appearance rather than extra equipment. Against the AMG Line it swaps in 20-inch AMG Multi Spoke alloys with a high-sheen black rim flange, and keeps Artico man-made leather inside. The fixed towbar remains an option.

The Urban Edition is currently available from £853.00 a month.

AMG Premium

Now the performance versions, all 443 bhp petrol. AMG Premium adds Digital Light LED headlights, MBUX augmented reality navigation, an electric panoramic glass sunroof, heated steering wheel and keyless operation over AMG Line, plus 21-inch AMG Y Spoke alloys, leather, a 360-degree camera, hands-free tailgate and adaptive suspension.

The AMG Premium is currently available from £1,193.45 a month.

AMG Premium Plus

Same 443 bhp, with AMG Nappa leather upholstery and a head-up display added over AMG Premium, on 21-inch AMG Cross Spoke alloys. Adaptive cruise control, active lane-change assist and heated front seats are all offered as factory options.

The AMG Premium Plus is currently available from £1,331.69 a month. Against the AMG Premium, that is currently £138.24/mo more expensive.

AMG Edition 53

An edition of the AMG Premium Plus, with 443 bhp and AMG Leather upholstery, on the same 21-inch AMG Cross Spoke wheels. Adaptive cruise control and active lane-change assist stay on the options list.

The AMG Edition 53 is currently available from £1,375.73 a month. Against the AMG Premium Plus, that is currently £44.04/mo more expensive.

Yes, for a family of up to five. It has five seats and five doors, Euro NCAP awarded it five stars with 90% for child occupant protection, and every version has autonomous emergency braking and parking sensors front and rear.

It depends on the powertrain. Petrol and diesel versions hold 620 litres with the rear seats up; the Plug-in hybrid gives up space to its battery and holds 470 litres. Fold the seats and the range is 1,530 to 1,680 litres.

It will drive without charging, but you'd be carrying a 25.3 kWh battery for nothing. Charging is at up to 11 kW, with the best version going from 0-100% in 2.8 hours. If you can't charge at home or at work, take the diesel. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides go into more detail.

Yes, and the figure varies by powertrain: 2,500 kg braked on the diesel, 2,400 kg on the petrol and 2,000 kg on the plug-in hybrid. Unbraked towing is 750 kg. A fixed towbar is a factory option on AMG Line, Urban Edition, AMG Premium and AMG Premium Plus, so specify it before the car is ordered - it can't be added to the contract later.

Three years with unlimited mileage, which is useful on a high-mileage lease. Paintwork is guaranteed for three years and there's a 30-year anti-corrosion guarantee. The plug-in hybrid's battery is covered for six years or 62,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of capacity.
