The LEPAS L8 is a five-seat plug-in hybrid SUV sold in one body style with a single 275bhp powertrain and two trims, Essence and Elevate. This page explains who the L8 suits, what comes as standard and how to choose between the two trims.
The LEPAS L8 is a five-seat plug-in hybrid SUV, 4.69 metres long, with a 507-litre boot and a 7-year / 100,000-mile manufacturer warranty. It's aimed at families and company car drivers who want a lot of car, and a lot of kit, for the money.
LEPAS is the newest brand from Chery International, which also sells Omoda, Jaecoo and Chery cars in the UK. The L8 is the brand's first model here, and it's pitched a rung above its stablemates on equipment, cabin materials and rear-seat space.
The choice is simple: one body style, one powertrain - a 1.5-litre turbo plug-in hybrid with an 18.4 kWh battery and 275 bhp - and two trims, Essence and Elevate.

The L8 is a family SUV built around space and standard equipment rather than driving thrills. Reviewers consistently praise the rear cabin - the 2.80 m wheelbase gives genuinely generous legroom - along with the smooth, quiet plug-in hybrid system and the long list of kit.
The criticism is equally consistent. Road testers report that the ride can feel unsettled on poor surfaces and that the steering tells you little, though most agree the car quietens down on the motorway. The touchscreen menus also divide opinion.
Practically, it stacks up: five seats, 507 litres of boot space with the rear seats up and 1,314 litres with them folded, plus braked towing up to 1,500 kg. The 7-year / 100,000-mile warranty, and 8 years / 100,000 miles on the battery, is longer cover than most rivals offer.
Leasing suits a car from a brand still establishing itself in the UK, because you hand it back at the end of the contract and the car's future value isn't your problem. You also get a new L8 with the full standard kit list, whichever trim you pick.
Every L8 has adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, automatic high beam and autonomous emergency braking. Comfort kit is generous too: keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control, an electric sunroof, privacy glass and rain-sensing wipers.
Built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the range, as are LED headlights and an electric parking brake. Servicing falls every 12 months or 10,000 miles, and the spare is a tyre repair kit.
There's only one: a plug-in hybrid. It's an automatic, front-wheel drive, and it'll run on petrol alone if you never plug it in - but the running costs only make sense if you charge it regularly.
A 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine works with an electric motor for 275 bhp and 365 Nm, 0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds and a 111 mph top speed. It takes a charge at up to 40 kW, which covers 30-80% in 20 minutes on the best version, and tows up to 1,500 kg braked. Insurance group 30.

Two trims, both with the same 275 bhp powertrain and front-wheel drive. Essence covers the essentials generously; Elevate is about seat comfort, parking aids and cabin finish.
Essence rides on 19" diamond cut alloy wheels and includes LED headlights, online navigation, wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, part leather upholstery, a rear-view camera and a panoramic sunroof with an electric sunshade. For plenty of families that's the whole job done.
The Essence is currently available from £394.30 a month.
Elevate swaps to 20" diamond cut alloy wheels and adds a 540 degree panoramic camera system, premium leather effect upholstery, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, a hands-free tailgate and automatic parking assist.
The Elevate is currently available from £323.89 a month. Against the Essence, that is currently £70.40/mo cheaper. Best value
Worth deciding before you order: paint. Five colours are offered across the range - Expressive emerald, Instinct white, Legend black, Mystic purple and Stoic grey - and it's one of the few choices you can't change later. Our guide to choosing your car covers spec, mileage and term together.
If you're weighing the L8 against the rest of the class, the JAECOO 8 shares much of its engineering, while the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are the established family SUV choices. The smaller Kia Niro is worth a look if you don't need the space. More from the brand on our LEPAS leasing page.
