The BYD Seal U is a mid-size, five-seat plug-in hybrid SUV offered in Boost, Comfort and Design trims, with front- or all-wheel drive and a six-year warranty. This page explains the range, what reviewers make of it and how to pick a version before you look at the live lease deals.
The BYD Seal U is a five-seat family SUV sold in one body style and with one type of powertrain: a 1.5-litre turbo plug-in hybrid. It's aimed squarely at households that want electric running for the school run and commute, without giving up a petrol engine for longer trips.
In BYD's UK line-up it sits as the plug-in hybrid family SUV, alongside the brand's fully electric cars on our BYD leasing pages. At 4.78 metres long with a 425-litre boot, it's a proper mid-size SUV rather than a jacked-up hatchback.
The choice is refreshingly simple. One body, one powertrain family producing between 215 and 319 bhp, and three trims: Boost, Comfort and Design.

The Seal U is BYD's plug-in hybrid family SUV: five seats, five doors, 425 litres of boot space with the rear seats up and 1,440 litres with them folded. It's backed by a six-year, 93,750-mile manufacturer warranty.
Reviewers consistently praise two things: the sheer amount of standard kit for the money, and how smoothly the petrol engine and electric motors hand over to each other. Refinement gets similar credit - road testers describe it as feeling much like an electric car in normal driving.
The criticism is just as consistent. The ride can feel unsettled over poor surfaces, the steering is light, and the boot trails some rivals. Worth a test drive on roads you actually use before you commit to a contract.
Because every version arrives loaded. Adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, an opening panoramic roof, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a powered tailgate, keyless entry and start and wireless phone charging are standard across the range.
Safety is a strong point too. The Seal U holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, scoring 90% for adult occupant protection and 86% for child occupant protection, and every version gets blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, autonomous emergency braking and front and rear parking sensors.
On the practical side: a 2.77-metre wheelbase, roof rails, a heat pump and braked towing of up to 1,300 kg depending on version. Service intervals are every 12 months or 10,000 miles.
There's only one to weigh up, and it suits you if you can plug in at home. The Seal U is a plug-in hybrid throughout, so there's no petrol-only or fully electric version to choose between.
A 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine works with an electric motor and a battery of 18.3 to 26.6 kWh depending on version, giving 215 to 319 bhp through an automatic single-speed transmission, with front- or all-wheel drive available.
Charge it and short journeys can run on electricity; leave it flat and the petrol engine does the work, less efficiently. Charging peaks at 18 kW, and the best version takes 35 minutes from 30-80%. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides cover how that works day to day.
| Plug-in hybrid | |
|---|---|
| Boot | 425 litres |
| Power | 215–319 bhp |
| Seats | 5 |
| Battery | 18.3–26.6 kWh |
| 0–62 mph | 5.9–8.9 s |
| Braked towing | 750–1300 kg |
Boost, Comfort and Design all share the same long standard-equipment list, 19-inch alloy wheels and artificial leather upholstery, so the real decision is drive and battery rather than kit. Five paint colours are offered across the range, including Delan black, Sky blue, Snow white and Time grey.
Boost is the entry version, with 215 bhp and front-wheel drive. It brings 19-inch alloys, LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, a vegan leather multifunction steering wheel, a heated steering wheel, artificial leather upholstery and a rear-view camera alongside the standard 360-degree system.
The Boost is currently available from £297.44 a month.
Comfort keeps the 215 bhp front-wheel-drive setup, the 19-inch alloys and the artificial leather trim. It's presented as a different flavour of the same car rather than an equipment upgrade, so pick it on how it's specified and how it looks to you.
The Comfort is currently available from £323.03 a month. Against the Boost, that is currently £25.58/mo more expensive.
Design is the one that changes the mechanical recipe: 319 bhp and all-wheel drive, on the same 19-inch alloys and artificial leather upholstery. Choose it for traction and pace rather than extra gadgets.
The Design is currently available from £417.47 a month. Against the Comfort, that is currently £94.44/mo more expensive.
