Reviewers consistently make the same point about the brand: the off-road ability is real, not decoration, and it sits underneath cars that are quiet, comfortable and expensively finished on the road. That combination is why the badge still carries weight.
Choosing between them is mostly about size and seats. And if you want the most rugged interpretation of the idea, it's the Land Rover Defender - a shape that nods to the original working model, with up to eight seats and braked towing up to 3,500 kg.

Land Rover is a British SUV maker with a reputation built on all-terrain engineering and, since the first Range Rover, on luxury too. Every model we price is an SUV, and every one carries a 3-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
The spread is wider than people expect. Measured end to end, the range runs from the Range Rover Evoque at 4.37 m to the Defender at 5.36 m, which is the difference between a car you park in town without thinking and one you plan your parking around.
Electrification is partial rather than total: six of the seven models offer a plug-in hybrid, seven offer diesel and five offer petrol. Reviewers tend to praise the ride comfort, the interiors and the sheer breadth of what these cars can do, while being frank that running costs sit high. Servicing is every 24 months or 21,000 miles across the models we price.
Seven Land Rover models, all SUVs. They differ mainly in length, seat count and how much towing and luxury you need, so read the seats and boot figures for each one and work back from what your week actually looks like.
The Land Rover Defender is the utilitarian one, available with 5 or 8 seats and a boot of 160 to 1094 litres depending on version. Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid power, braked towing up to 3,500 kg, and nine trims to pick through. Deals start from £704.39 a month.
The Land Rover Discovery is the seven-seat family workhorse: 4.96 m long, diesel only, three trims, and braked towing up to 3,500 kg. Boot space behind the third row is 172 litres, so it's a proper seven-seater first and a load-lugger second. Deals start from £1,001.95 a month.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport suits families who want flexibility without the length: 4.60 m, 5 or 7 seats, a boot of 115 to 780 litres depending on version, and a choice of diesel or plug-in hybrid across five trims. It tows up to 2,500 kg braked. Deals start from £688.76 a month.
The Land Rover Range Rover is the flagship, at roughly 5.05 m with 4 or 7 seats and a boot of 1093 to 1286 litres depending on version. Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid, seven trims, a 5-star Euro NCAP rating and braked towing up to 3,500 kg. Deals start from £1,246.66 a month.
The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is the compact option, 4.37 m long with 5 seats and a 472-litre boot. Three trims, petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid, and braked towing up to 2,000 kg. It's the one to look at if your driving is mostly urban. Deals start from £684.71 a month.
The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is the keener-driving take on the flagship formula: about 4.95 m, 5 seats, a 647-litre boot and ten trims. Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid, 5-star Euro NCAP, braked towing up to 3,500 kg. Deals start from £889.42 a month.
The Land Rover Range Rover Velar is the design-led five-seater, 4.80 m long with a 568-litre boot and braked towing up to 2,500 kg. Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions are available. Deals start from £820.81 a month.
There's no battery-electric Land Rover in the line-up we price. What the brand does offer a driver stepping away from pure petrol is plug-in hybrid power on six of the seven models, alongside diesel on all seven.
The Defender, Discovery Sport, Range Rover, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar are all available as plug-in hybrids. That covers the compact end of the range and the flagship alike, so you're not forced up or down a size to get one.
A plug-in hybrid pairs a petrol engine with a battery you charge from the mains, which usually makes sense if you can charge at home or at work and your daily mileage is short. Leasing hands you a brand-new Land Rover on a fixed monthly rental, with the manufacturer's 3-year, unlimited-mileage warranty covering the car and servicing due every 24 months or 21,000 miles. Road tax and the manufacturer warranty are included for the duration of a standard lease.
Because leases typically run to three or four years, the warranty covers most or all of the term. The residual value - what the car is expected to be worth at the end - is the leasing company's problem, not yours, which matters on cars in this price bracket.
FVL has been arranging leases like these for over 25 years, and the Discovery Sport is a good example of why the model page matters: at 5 or 7 seats and a boot ranging from 115 to 780 litres, the version you pick changes the car completely.
Start with seats and length, then check towing. Those three things separate the seven models more than anything else, and they're the questions that come up most often when someone is deciding between two Land Rovers on a shortlist.
Want the smallest and easiest to park? The Range Rover Evoque, at 4.37 m with 5 seats and a 472-litre boot.
Need seven seats or more? Four models offer them: the Discovery with 7, the Discovery Sport with 5 or 7, the Range Rover with 4 or 7, and the Defender with 5 or 8.
Towing a caravan or a horsebox? The Defender handles the most, at up to 3,500 kg braked. The Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are also rated to 3,500 kg braked, with the Discovery Sport and Velar at 2,500 kg and the Evoque at 2,000 kg.
