BYD started life making batteries and still builds its own, which is part of why it can put so much standard equipment and battery capacity into a mainstream family car. The current BYD line-up we price runs to 10 models, and every one of them carries a 6-year / 93,750-mile manufacturer warranty.
Those ten split into five SUVs, three hatchbacks and two saloons. Six models are offered as an electric car and five as a plug-in hybrid - a petrol engine paired with a battery you charge from the mains, so short trips can be done on electricity alone.
Choosing between them is mostly a question of size and powertrain, and the compact Atto 2 is the sensible place to begin: a five-seat SUV of about 4.31 m that can be had either fully electric or as a plug-in hybrid.

BYD is a Chinese manufacturer that makes its own batteries and electric drive systems, and it has built its UK reputation on generous equipment, strong safety scores and long warranty cover rather than on badge history.
Reviewers consistently praise the amount of kit and cabin space for the money, and they're just as consistent about the two weak spots: ride quality that can feel unsettled on poor surfaces, and touchscreens that put too many functions behind a menu. Worth a test drive before you commit.
The warranty position is the same right across the range we price - 6 years or 93,750 miles, whichever comes first. The line-up stretches from the 3.99 m Dolphin Surf to the 4.84 m Seal 6, and six of the ten models can be ordered as a pure electric car.

The BYD Atto 2 is the compact end of the SUV range at about 4.31 m, with five seats and a boot of 400-450 litres depending on version. It comes as an electric car or a plug-in hybrid, across three trims, with a 5-star Euro NCAP rating and braked towing up to 750 kg. Deals start from £288.50 a month.
The BYD Atto 3 Evo is the electric family SUV: 4.46 m long, five seats, a 490-litre boot and two trims to pick from. It's also the towing choice here, rated for up to 1,500 kg braked, and holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Deals start from £325.06 a month.
The BYD Seal U is a plug-in hybrid SUV for drivers who want electric running for the commute without giving up a petrol engine for longer trips. It's 4.78 m long, seats five, has a 425-litre boot and tows up to 1,300 kg braked. Deals start from £343.19 a month.
The BYD Sealion 5 is the other plug-in hybrid SUV, at 4.74 m with five seats and a 463-litre boot across two trims. A straightforward option if you need family space and can't yet commit to charging every day. Deals start from £281.27 a month.
The BYD Sealion 7 is the larger electric SUV in the range: 4.83 m, five seats, a 520-litre boot, three trims and braked towing up to 1,500 kg. It carries a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Deals start from £318.73 a month.
The BYD Dolphin is the electric hatchback for drivers who want EV running costs in a conventional shape. It's 4.29 m long, seats five, offers a 364-litre boot and two trims, and holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Deals start from £262.67 a month.
The BYD Dolphin G takes the hatchback idea and makes it a plug-in hybrid, so there's no charging dependency. At 4.16 m with five seats, a 425-litre boot, four trims and braked towing up to 750 kg, it suits mixed-mileage drivers. Deals start from £311.11 a month.
The BYD Dolphin Surf is the small electric car of the group at 3.99 m, the shortest model we price. It seats four, has a 308-litre boot, comes in three trims and holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Ideal for tight streets. Deals start from £264.35 a month.
The BYD Seal is the electric saloon, and the model reviewers tend to rate most highly for the way it drives. It's 4.80 m long with five seats, a 485-litre boot, two trims, a 5-star Euro NCAP rating and braked towing up to 1,500 kg. Deals start from £318.68 a month.
The BYD Seal 6 is the plug-in hybrid saloon and the longest model we price at 4.84 m, with five seats, a boot of 491-500 litres depending on version and four trims. Three body styles are available, each covered on its model page. Deals start from £317.53 a month.
BYD gives a driver leaving petrol behind two routes: six models available as a pure electric car, and five available as a plug-in hybrid. Which suits you comes down to how reliably you can charge.
Go fully electric and the choice is the Atto 3 Evo, Sealion 7, Dolphin, Dolphin Surf and Seal, plus the Atto 2 in electric form - sizes from 3.99 m up to 4.83 m, so there's an EV here whether you're parking in a city or loading a 520-litre boot.
If home charging isn't settled yet, the plug-in hybrids are the Atto 2, Seal U, Sealion 5, Dolphin G and Seal 6. You charge them for daily journeys and the petrol engine handles the long ones. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides explain how each one behaves on a lease.
Leasing a BYD is contract hire: fixed monthly rentals for an agreed term and mileage, with road tax included for the duration and the car handed back at the end. Depreciation isn't your problem, which matters with a younger badge.
The 6-year / 93,750-mile manufacturer warranty applies to every model we price, so a typical two-to-four-year contract sits comfortably inside it. Servicing is at your cost unless you add a maintenance package, which spreads it across the monthly rental.
The Seal is a good example of why the lease route works for this brand - a well-reviewed electric saloon with a 485-litre boot, handed back before residual values become anyone's guess but ours.

For tight streets and easy parking, the Dolphin Surf is the one: 3.99 m long, four seats and a 308-litre boot. If you want a small car that still takes five, the Dolphin is 4.29 m.
For family duty, the Sealion 7 offers a 520-litre boot, the Atto 3 Evo 490 litres and the Sealion 5 463 litres, all with five seats. The Seal 6 is the saloon answer, with 491-500 litres depending on version.
Towing a caravan or trailer? The Atto 3 Evo is rated for up to 1,500 kg braked, the most in the range, with the Sealion 7 and Seal matching that figure. The Seal U manages 1,300 kg.
Want to go electric? Six models offer it. Can't charge reliably? The Atto 2, Seal U, Sealion 5, Dolphin G and Seal 6 are plug-in hybrids. And if you need seven seats, no BYD we price will do it - every model here seats five, or four in the Dolphin Surf.
