The BYD Dolphin is a compact five-seat electric hatchback with a 60.4 kWh battery, 201 bhp and a WLTP range of up to 265 miles. This page explains what the car is like, what comes as standard and how the Comfort and Design trims differ.
The BYD Dolphin is a five-seat electric hatchback, 4.29 m long, with a 60.4 kWh battery and a WLTP range of up to 265 miles. It suits drivers who want a small, well-equipped electric car for commuting, the school run and the occasional longer trip.
It sits near the bottom of BYD's UK line-up, below the brand's larger electric SUVs and saloons, and it's the more grown-up, more usable option among the maker's smaller cars.
The choice here is simple: one hatchback body, one electric powertrain, and two trims - Comfort and Design.

The Dolphin is BYD's compact electric hatchback: five seats, five doors, a 364-litre boot with the rear seats up and 1,329 litres with them folded. It's backed by a 6-year / 93,750-mile manufacturer warranty.
Reviewers consistently praise how much room it has for a car of this size, with genuine space for adults in the back, and they rate the standard equipment as generous for the class. The interior styling divides opinion, and road testers regularly criticise the touchscreen menus and the driver-assistance chimes, which take some learning.
Nobody calls it a driver's car. It's quiet and easy at motorway speed, light and manageable around town.
Because you get a lot of standard kit without picking through an options list. Every Dolphin has adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, keyless entry and start, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety is a strong point. The Dolphin holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, scoring 89% for adult occupants, 87% for child occupants, 85% for vulnerable road users and 79% for safety assist, and every version has autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist and front and rear parking sensors.
A heat pump is fitted as standard too, which helps protect range in cold weather - worth having on a car you'll keep for three or four years. If you're new to electric, our electric car guide covers the basics before you order.
There's only one, so the decision is really whether electric works for you. Every Dolphin uses the same battery, motor and automatic transmission, driving the front wheels.
The 60.4 kWh battery and 201 bhp motor give a WLTP range of up to 265 miles, 0-62 mph in 7.0 seconds and an automatic gearbox with no gears to worry about. It charges at up to 110 kW, with 30-80% taking 26 minutes on the best version, or 0-100% in 6.2 hours at 11 kW at home on the best version.
It suits you if you can charge at home or reliably at work. Official efficiency is 3.9 miles/kWh, and our guide to charging an electric car explains what that means day to day.
| Electric | |
|---|---|
| Boot | 364 litres |
| Power | 201 bhp |
| Seats | 5 |
| Battery | 60.4 kWh |
| 0–62 mph | 7 s |
| Electric range (WLTP) | 265 miles |
Both trims share the same battery, motor and safety kit, so the difference is comfort and glass rather than performance.
Comfort rides on 17-inch bi-colour alloy wheels with artificial leather upholstery, LED headlights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a vegan leather multifunction steering wheel, a heated steering wheel and a rear-view camera alongside the 360-degree system.
The Comfort is currently available from £300.08 a month.
Design keeps the same 201 bhp front-wheel-drive setup and adds a fixed panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, and privacy glass for the rear window and rear side windows. Its 17-inch alloys use a tri-colour finish.
The Design is currently available from £302.80 a month. Against the Comfort, that is currently £2.71/mo more expensive.
If you carry passengers in summer or want a brighter cabin, the panoramic roof and ventilated seats are the reasons to step up. If you don't, Comfort already has the equipment most people use daily.
If you're weighing up other small electric hatchbacks, the CUPRA Raval covers similar ground with a sportier flavour. It's also worth browsing the wider BYD leasing range to see how the Dolphin compares with its bigger siblings.
