The BMW X3 is a five-seat premium SUV that sits in the middle of BMW's SUV range: big enough for a family and a dog, small enough at 4.76 metres long to live with in a town car park.

It suits drivers who want a comfortable, well-equipped SUV with proper towing ability - up to 2,500 kg braked on the right version - and who'd rather not step up to something the size of a full estate-plus.

The choice is simple enough. One body style, three powertrains (petrol, diesel and a plug-in hybrid), three everyday trims in xLine, M Sport and M Sport Pro, plus the M50 for anyone who wants the performance version.

About the BMW X3

The current X3 is the fourth generation, on sale in this form since 2024, and it's one of BMW's best-known cars worldwide. Every version is automatic and all-wheel drive.

Reviewers consistently praise the wide digital display, the strong engines and the sense of solidity; the common criticism is a firm ride on bigger wheels and some hard plastics inside where the previous car used softer materials. Practically, you get five seats, a boot of 460 to 570 litres depending on version and a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty. Euro NCAP awarded the X3 its full five stars.

Why lease a BMW X3?

Because the standard kit list is unusually complete for a premium SUV, which matters more on a lease than on a purchase - you live with the specification you order for the whole contract, and you can't add to it later.

Every X3, whatever the trim, has adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory, a powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, three-zone climate control and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety and assistance kit is equally thorough: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors and automatic high beam. Service intervals are every 24 months or 18,000 miles, and there's a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel.

Which X3 powertrain is right for me?

Pick on mileage and charging: diesel for long motorway runs, plug-in hybrid if you can charge at home, petrol if you do neither in any great quantity. All three are eight-speed automatics with all-wheel drive.

Petrol

Petrol X3s run from 205 bhp to 393 bhp, with WLTP economy of 36.2 to 40.9 mpg and a 570-litre boot with the seats up. Nothing to plug in, nothing to think about - the straightforward option if your mileage is moderate and mixed.

Diesel

The 2-litre, 194 bhp diesel returns 47.1 to 47.9 mpg on the WLTP test and pulls 400 Nm, so it's the relaxed motorway choice. It also tows 2,500 kg braked and keeps the 570-litre boot, which makes it the pick for caravans and horseboxes.

Plug-in hybrid

The plug-in hybrid pairs a 2-litre turbo with a 22.7 kWh battery (19.7 kWh usable) for 295 bhp and 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds. Charge at up to 11 kW - about 2.3 hours to full on the best version - or it simply runs as a hybrid. The boot drops to 460 litres and towing to 2,000 kg. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides explain how the tax side works.

Which X3 trim should I choose?

All four versions start from the same generous standard specification, so the decision is mostly about wheels, upholstery, parking kit and looks rather than about missing essentials.

xLine

xLine rides on 18-inch "Y Spoke" alloy wheels with cloth upholstery, and includes a wireless charging tray, keyless motor start with acoustic drive, ambient lighting and electrically adjustable heated door mirrors. A 360-degree camera, panoramic glass roof, heated steering wheel and privacy glass are all available as options. The xLine is currently available from £589.70 a month.

M Sport

M Sport moves to 19-inch "Y Spoke" alloys, artificial leather upholstery and sports suspension, and adds an M sport leather steering wheel plus the park assistant with reversing assistant, active park distance control and trailer assistant. Adaptive suspension and a fixed towbar are options. The M Sport is currently available from £601.48 a month. Against the xLine, that is currently £11.77/mo more expensive.

M Sport Pro

M Sport Pro is largely about presence: 20-inch "Double Spoke" alloys and privacy glass over M Sport, with launch control thrown in. Ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a panoramic glass roof remain options. The M Sport Pro is currently available from £654.52 a month. Against the M Sport, that is currently £53.04/mo more expensive.

Then there's the performance X3.

M50

The M50 is the 393 bhp petrol, good for 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds, on 20-inch "M Double Spoke" alloys, and it adds adaptive LED headlights over M Sport Pro. Road testers rate its engine as the most characterful in the range. The M50 is currently available from £826.08 a month. Against the M Sport Pro, that is currently £171.56/mo more expensive.

A Tech Pack is offered as an add-on rather than a trim of its own, and option availability varies by version - worth checking with our team before you commit to a factory order.

BMW X3 FAQs

Yes. It's a five-seat, five-door SUV with three-zone climate control, a powered tailgate and a five-star Euro NCAP rating, scoring 88% for adult occupant protection and 84% for child occupant protection. At 4.76 m long it still fits normal parking spaces.

Between 460 and 570 litres with the rear seats up, depending on version, and 1,600 to 1,700 litres with them folded. Petrol and diesel versions get 570 litres; the plug-in hybrid gives up some space to its battery at 460 litres.

No, but you won't see the benefit without charging it. With an 11 kW charge point it takes around 2.3 hours to fill the 22.7 kWh battery on the best version, so home or workplace charging is what makes it worthwhile.

It can. Braked towing is 2,000 to 2,500 kg depending on version, with 750 kg unbraked. The diesel is rated at 2,500 kg braked; the plug-in hybrid at 2,000 kg. A fixed towbar is a factory option on M Sport, M Sport Pro and M50, so it needs specifying at order.

Three years with unlimited mileage, which covers a typical lease term comfortably however many miles you do. There's also a three-year paintwork guarantee, six-year anti-corrosion cover, and on the plug-in hybrid an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty.

It depends entirely on what's available at the time - trim, powertrain, term and mileage all move the figure, and a dearer car to buy isn't always dearer to lease. The xLine is currently from £589.70 a month. Check the live X3 deals below, or our guide to choosing mileage and spec.
