Driving tips for Bristol

Bristol is a city in the West of England and is on the River Avon; it is bordered by the counties of Gloucestershire to the north and Somerset to the south.

As with many other forward-thinking cities in the UK, it's important to note that driving in the city center of Bristol can be both frustrating and expensive due to the city's commitment to green legislation. This trend is similar to London's approach.

The main motorway into Bristol is the M32 from London or Birmingham. The outer ring road Bristol Ring Road, the A4174 or the Avon Ring Road, is very busy and has quite a few traffic light roundabouts. If you stay in the appropriate lane and adhere to the road markings, you can travel towards Easton, Temple Meads, Stokes Croft, or The Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI).

Clifton Suspension Bridge operates a card-only toll system including Google, Samsung and Apple Pay.

The Clean Air Zone covers a central area of Bristol, including parts of the city center and some main roads. The boundary of the zone is clearly marked with signs to inform drivers when they are entering or leaving the zone.

The fees for non-compliant vehicles entering the Bristol Clean Air Zone are outlined below: (JULY 23)

  • Private cars and light goods vehicles (up to 3.5 tons): £9 per day
