View dealThe Volkswagen Tiguan is a five-seat family SUV, 4.54 metres long, sold in one body style with a choice of petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid power. It sits in the middle of Volkswagen's SUV line-up, and is the sensible family option rather than the flashy one.
This is the third-generation Tiguan, on sale in this form since 2024. Every version is automatic and front-wheel drive, and every version carries a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
The choice comes down to three things: which engine suits your mileage, and then one of four trims - Life, R-Line, Black Edition and Style.

The Tiguan is Volkswagen's best-selling model worldwide, and the current car is a deliberately conservative reworking of a proven formula rather than a reinvention.
Reviewers consistently praise the cabin quality, the amount of rear legroom and the calm, composed way it drives. The usual criticism is the touchscreen-led control layout, which takes a few days to learn - worth ten minutes of fiddling at handover.
Practically, it's a straightforward five-seater with a boot of 490 to 652 litres depending on the version, and it comes with a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty. Three-zone climate control, roof rails and privacy glass are standard across the range.
Because the standard specification is unusually complete, which matters more on a lease than on a purchase: you're less likely to need options to make the car feel finished, and options are the part of a quote that quietly inflates a monthly figure.
Every Tiguan, whichever trim, gets built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control and self-steering parking. The safety kit is equally generous: blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition and front and rear parking sensors with a rear-view camera.
Euro NCAP awarded the current Tiguan 5 stars, with 83% for adult occupant protection and 88% for child occupant protection. Braked towing runs up to 2,000 kg on the strongest versions, and the spare is a tyre repair kit rather than a wheel.
Pick by mileage and by whether you can charge at home. There are three: a 1.5-litre turbo petrol, a 2-litre diesel and a 1.5-litre turbo plug-in hybrid, all automatic and all front-wheel drive.
The 1.5-litre turbo petrol has 128-148 bhp and a 7-speed automatic gearbox, with WLTP economy of 44.1-47.9 mpg. It's the simplest answer if you cover average miles, mostly local, and don't want to think about charging. The 652-litre boot is the largest in the range.
The 2-litre diesel has 148 bhp and 360 Nm of torque, a 7-speed automatic, and WLTP economy of 50.4-52.3 mpg. It suits high motorway mileage and towing - it's the version rated at 2,000 kg braked. If you're weighing fuels, our petrol, diesel or electric guide is a sensible starting point.
The plug-in hybrid pairs the 1.5-litre turbo with a 25.7 kWh battery (19.7 kWh usable) for 201-268 bhp and a 6-speed automatic. It needs plugging in to make sense: 0-100% takes 2.5 hours at 11 kW on the best version, or 5-80% in 26 minutes at 40 kW. The boot drops to 490 litres.

Four trims, and they split neatly: Life covers the basics well, R-Line and Black Edition add comfort and looks, and Style is the plug-in hybrid's own specification.
Life starts at 128 bhp on 18-inch "Napoli" alloy wheels with cloth upholstery, and includes LED headlamps, navigation, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with paddle shift, a multifunction front-facing camera and Park Assist Plus with Park Distance Control. An opening panoramic roof and a retractable towbar are available as options.
The Life is currently available from £375.77 a month.
R-Line moves to 20-inch "York" alloys and adds a heated, touch-control steering wheel, ambient lighting with 30 colour options, front massage seats, heated front sports seats and a hands-free tailgate. A 360-degree camera and heated rear seats are optional.
The R-Line is currently available from £344.68 a month. Against the Life, that is currently £31.09/mo cheaper. Best value
Black Edition builds on R-Line with 20-inch York Black alloys and anti-theft wheel bolts, area view including a rear-view camera, a memory feature for Park Assist Plus, Keyless Go central locking, a head-up display, matrix LED headlights and voice control. It's the darker-trimmed look, with real kit behind it.
The Black Edition is currently available from £354.23 a month. Against the R-Line, that is currently £9.55/mo more expensive.
Style is the plug-in hybrid trim, from 201 bhp, on 19-inch "Catania" diamond-turned alloys. Over Life it adds leatherette door and side trim inserts, heated front sports seats, a heated steering wheel, massage seats, front and rear parking sensors with park assistance plus, Keyless Go, a powered tailgate and adaptive suspension.
The Style is currently available from £415.81 a month.
Two packs sit on top of a trim rather than replacing it. The Comfort Pack adds leather upholstery; the Comfort/Tech pack adds leather upholstery, area view with rear-view camera, the Park Assist Plus memory feature and a head-up display. Nine paint colours are offered across the range.
If the Tiguan is on your shortlist, the Škoda Kodiaq and Volvo XC60 cover similar family-SUV ground, the CUPRA Formentor takes a sharper-edged approach, and the Škoda Karoq sits a size below. More from the brand is on our Volkswagen leasing pages.
