For those looking for a five or seven-seater SUV, the Skoda Kodiaq is an impressive creation. It should worry the market leaders since this well priced, well-made and well-equipped model will prove to be hugely popular.
There is a choice of three diesel and three petrol engines, the smallest unit is the 1.4 litre petrol engine which produces either 123 bhp or 148 bhp. For more power, there's a 2.0 litre petrol engine producing 187 bhp which delivers a better response in the middle of the rev range. Most buyers will be tempted by the 2.0 litre diesel unit which offers outputs of 113 bhp, 148 bhp and 187 bhp with all of them producing economy of around 56 mpg. There's a choice of a manual gearbox or an automatic transmission which offers a quiet and smooth quick shifting action. Fuel economy for the Kodiaq ranges from 38 mpg to 56 mpg.
While the interior may not be the class leader, the Skoda Kodiaq's smart design and practical ideas make it a sound choice. There's a 6.5-inch touchscreen, in the better spec trims this is an 8-inch touchscreen, and one of the biggest boots in its class at 720 litres - with the rear seats folded flat, this extends to a huge 2,065 litres.
However, one of its biggest selling points will be the equipment levels to help it make an impact in a competitive segment. Indeed, buyers will get to enjoy a long list of kit which includes smartphone connectivity while the SE spec comes with rear parking sensors, cruise control, alloy wheels and keyless ignition. The top spec versions have an improved satnav, seven seats and an electrically operated boot.
Skoda have a hard-earned reputation for building solid cars, and the Kodiaq is an excellent example. The interior has been made with premium materials and the cabin has been designed to withstand lots of family punishment. The controls are also well placed and easy to reach. Out on the road, the Kodiaq has a composed stance so it's a comfortable car to drive over long journeys; despite its size, the vehicle feels solid on motorways and comfort levels really do impress. It's also possible to add the adaptive dynamic chassis control which enables the driver to switch to various driving modes so the suspension can be softened to be more comfortable.
Essentially, the Skoda Kodiaq is a great creation from a carmaker that really knows what it's doing; the Kodiaq joins the ranks of its other impressive offerings and should dominate the sector.
