View dealThe Volkswagen Tayron is a large family SUV, 4.79 metres long, offered with five or seven seats depending on the version you choose. It sits above the smaller SUVs in Volkswagen's range and is aimed squarely at families who have run out of room in a mid-size car.
It comes in one body style only, so the decision is really about two things: which engine you want under the bonnet, and how much kit you want inside. Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid are all available, all automatic.
Four trims run through the range - Life, Match, Style and R-Line - and the choice between them is mostly about wheels, seats and cabin trim rather than anything mechanical.

The Tayron is Volkswagen's answer to the seven-seat family SUV question, and it replaced the old seven-seat version of the Tiguan in the line-up. Road testers consistently describe it as refined, comfortable on long runs and easy to live with, if conservatively styled.
Boot space runs from 345 litres with every seat in use up to 705 litres on the version with the largest load bay, and up to 1,915 litres with the rear seats folded. It's rated five stars by Euro NCAP, with 87% for adult occupant protection, and comes with a three-year, 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty.
Towing matters to a lot of Tayron customers. Braked towing runs from 1,800 kg up to 2,400 kg depending on the version, so check the figure for the exact model before you order.
Leasing suits the Tayron because the whole range is generously equipped from the entry trim upwards, so you're not forced up the range to get the safety and convenience kit that matters day to day. Every version is covered by the same three-year, 60,000-mile warranty.
Standard across the range: adaptive cruise control, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three-zone climate control, roof rails and self-steering parking with front and rear sensors plus a rear-view camera.
On the safety side, every Tayron gets blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam. Servicing falls every 24 months or 18,600 miles, which keeps the admin light over a typical contract.
Three choices: petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid. All are automatic, and the short version is that the plug-in hybrid only makes sense if you can charge it regularly, while the diesel still makes sense if you cover big motorway miles.
The petrol range covers 148-201 bhp with a seven-speed automatic, front- or all-wheel drive. WLTP economy runs from 34.4 to 44.8 mpg and 0-62 mph takes between 7.3 and 9.6 seconds. Pick this if your mileage is modest and you'd rather not think about charging.
The 2.0-litre diesel produces 148 bhp and 360 Nm, drives the front wheels through a seven-speed automatic and returns 47.1-50.4 mpg on the WLTP test. It's the pick for consistent long-distance work, with 9.7 seconds to 62 mph and 2,000 kg braked towing.
The plug-in hybrid pairs a 1.5-litre turbo with a 25.7 kWh battery (19.7 kWh usable) for 201-268 bhp through a six-speed automatic, front-wheel drive. It needs plugging in to be worthwhile: the best version charges 0-100% in 2.5 hours at 11 kW, or 10-80% in 26 minutes at 40 kW. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides cover how that works in practice.

Four trims, and the differences are wheels, seats and cabin trim rather than engines - every trim starts with the same 148 bhp front-wheel-drive version.
Life covers the basics properly: LED headlamps, navigation, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with paddle shift, a multifunction front-facing camera and Park Assist Plus with Park Distance Control. It rides on 18-inch "Napoli" alloys with cloth upholstery, and an opening panoramic roof and retractable towbar are available as options.
The Life is currently available from £457.87 a month.
Match brings the comfort kit most families actually notice: heated front seats, a tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof with rear panoramic glass, leatherette door and side trim inserts, spoken voice commands for phone and navigation, plus a 360-degree camera, heated steering wheel, hands-free tailgate and privacy glass. Wheels are 18-inch "Bologna" alloys with black diamond-turned surface and anti-theft bolts.
The Match is currently available from £451.91 a month. Against the Life, that is currently £5.96/mo cheaper. Best value
Style adds 19-inch "Catania" alloys with anti-theft bolts, front sports seats with a massage function, foam-film door and side trim panels with leatherette insert, and 30-colour interior ambient lighting. Worth knowing that autonomous emergency braking appears as a factory option on this trim rather than standard.
The Style is currently available from £463.78 a month. Against the Match, that is currently £11.87/mo more expensive.
R-Line is mainly about appearance - 20-inch "York" alloys and sportier detailing - with wireless phone charging added to the standard kit. The 360-degree camera, opening panoramic roof, heated rear seats and retractable towbar are all available as options here, so read the spec of the individual deal carefully.
The R-Line is currently available from £468.82 a month. Against the Style, that is currently £5.04/mo more expensive.
Two packs sit on top of the trims rather than replacing them. The Comfort Pack adds spoken voice commands and leather upholstery; the Comfort/Tech pack adds those plus a 15-inch infotainment display. Availability varies by deal, so ask our team if you want one.
If you're weighing up the Tayron, it's worth a look at the Peugeot 5008, the Chery Tiggo 8 and larger Chery Tiggo 9, or the Mazda CX-60. You'll find the rest of the range on our Volkswagen leasing pages.
Specifications from Volkswagen's UK data and Euro NCAP; equipment, seating and availability vary by version, so check the individual deal before you order.
