The Polestar 2 is a five-seat, five-door electric hatchback: a fastback shape that sits a little higher than a conventional saloon, with a proper hatch tailgate behind it. It's the model that established Polestar as a brand in its own right rather than a Volvo offshoot, and it sits below the brand's larger SUVs.

It suits drivers who want a premium electric car with a bit of design confidence about it, and who can charge at home or at work. Road testers consistently praise the build quality and the long official range; the common criticisms are a firm ride and a fairly snug rear seat.

The choice is simple. One body style, one electric powertrain family with a 70-82 kWh battery, and two trims: Standard Range Prime and Long Range Prime.

About the Polestar 2

The current 2 has been on sale in this form since 2022, and it's an electric family hatchback with a premium slant rather than a mainstream one. Reviewers routinely rate it for cabin quality and its calm, easy-to-drive manners.

Practically, it's 4.61 m long with a 407-litre boot behind the rear seats, rising to 1,097 litres with them folded, and the hatchback opening makes loading easier than a conventional boot lid would. Five seats, a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty, and a full 5-star Euro NCAP rating with 93% for adult occupant protection.

Range runs from 344 miles up to 409 miles WLTP depending on version, which puts the best of them among the longer-legged electric cars on the road.

Why lease a Polestar 2?

Because every version arrives well equipped, so there's no long options conversation before you order. Adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, a fixed panoramic glass roof, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging and built-in navigation are standard across the range.

So is the safety kit: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors and LED headlights. A heat pump is fitted as standard too, which matters more than people expect on cold mornings.

For leasing customers, the useful detail is servicing: every 24 months or 30,000 miles, so many drivers will see the workshop once in a typical contract. Which 2 powertrain is right for me?

There's only one: the 2 is fully electric, automatic, with no petrol or diesel alternative. What varies is battery size, power and whether drive goes to the rear wheels or all four.

Electric

A 70-82 kWh battery and 268-469 bhp, rear- or all-wheel drive, with WLTP range up to 409 miles on the best version. It needs plugging in: home charging takes 7 hours at 11 kW, and the quickest version does 10-80% in 28 minutes at 205 kW. Ideal if you can charge where you park.

Which 2 trim should I choose?

Two trims, and the honest answer is that they're separated by battery and power rather than by equipment. Both are generously specified from the off.

Standard Range Prime

The entry version has 268 bhp and rear-wheel drive, on 19-inch "Aero" alloy wheels with cloth upholstery. It includes the fixed panoramic sunroof with its lit Polestar symbol, a heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon premium sound, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a powered tailgate, rear-view camera and automatic headlights. The Standard Range Prime is currently available from £395.65 a month.

Long Range Prime

Same cabin, same 19-inch "Aero" alloys, same cloth upholstery - this one is about the bigger battery and the longer legs rather than any extra kit, starting at 295 bhp with rear-wheel drive. Worth a look if you regularly do longer runs. The Long Range Prime is currently available from £353.17 a month. Against the Standard Range Prime, that is currently £42.48/mo cheaper. Best value

Polestar 2 FAQs

For most families, yes. It seats five, carries 407 litres of luggage with the rear seats up and scored 5 stars at Euro NCAP, including 89% for child occupant protection. Rear headroom is tighter than the exterior suggests, so sit taller teenagers in the back before you commit.

Official WLTP range is 344 to 409 miles depending on the version and battery, so the 409-mile figure belongs to the best version rather than the whole range. Expect less in cold weather and at sustained motorway speeds, as with any electric car.

On the best version, a rapid charger at 205 kW takes it from 10-80% in 28 minutes, and an 11 kW AC supply covers 0-100% in about 7 hours. Home charging overnight is how most drivers will live with it - our guide to charging explains the options.

Three years or 60,000 miles from the manufacturer, whichever comes first, plus an 8-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty guaranteeing 70% of capacity and a 12-year anti-corrosion guarantee. Servicing is every 24 months or 30,000 miles.

It's rated to tow up to 1,500 kg braked, which covers a small caravan or a decent trailer. Roof load is 75 kg. If you plan to tow on a lease, tell us before you order so the tow bar is specified correctly from the factory.
