View dealThe MG IM5 is a large five-seat electric hatchback that sits at the top of MG's UK line-up, well above the familiar small hatchbacks and SUVs. At 4.93 metres long with a 457-litre boot, it's aimed squarely at drivers who cover serious miles and want a sleek, saloon-shaped car rather than another SUV.
The choice here is refreshingly simple. One body style, one electric powertrain family and three versions: Standard Range, Long Range and the 741bhp Performance.
It suits motorway commuters, company car drivers and families who want a long-range electric car with a hatchback tailgate. If most of your driving is short urban hops, a smaller EV will serve you better.

The IM5 is MG's premium electric flagship, developed by its parent group's IM sub-brand and tuned in the UK for European roads. It's a five-seater with a 457-litre boot, a 7-year / 80,000-mile manufacturer warranty and a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
Reviewers consistently praise three things: the headline range of up to 441 miles WLTP on the best version, the charging speed, and how quiet and well-trimmed the cabin feels on a long run. Road testers are less kind about the touchscreen-led controls, since there's very little physical switchgear, and opinion on ride quality genuinely splits - some testers find it composed and comfortable, others find it fidgety on poor surfaces.
Worth a test drive before you commit, then. The 360-degree camera earns its keep.
Because you get flagship-level equipment without having to tick options. Every IM5 arrives with adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a fixed panoramic glass roof, wireless phone charging and a heat pump as standard.
Safety and assistance kit is thorough across the range: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors and self-steering parking. Euro NCAP awarded five stars, with 89% for adult occupant protection and 87% for safety assist.
On practicality, the hatchback tailgate opens onto 457 litres, rising to 1,290 litres with the rear seats folded, and every version can tow up to 1,500kg braked. Four-wheel steering shrinks the turning circle to 10.0 metres, which matters in a car this long. If EVs are new to you, our electric car guide covers the basics before you order.
There's only one: fully electric, with an automatic drive and no petrol engine anywhere in the range. What changes between versions is battery size, power and whether drive goes to the rear wheels or all four.
Battery capacity runs from 75 to 100 kWh, power from 291 to 741bhp, and WLTP range up to 441 miles on the best version. Charging is the standout: up to 350kW at a public rapid charger, and 10-100% in around 12 hours from a 7kW home wallbox on the best version. Rear- or all-wheel drive, depending on the version you pick.
| Electric | |

| Boot | 457 litres |
| Power | 291–741 bhp |
| Seats | 5 |
| Battery | 75–100 kWh |

| Electric range (WLTP) | 304–441 miles |
Three versions, and the real difference between them is battery, power and drive, because the standard equipment list is already generous on all of them.
The entry car: 291bhp, rear-wheel drive, 19-inch "Aero" alloy wheels, leather upholstery, LED headlights, satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the double-glazed thermal-insulating panoramic glass roof. It also gets a powered tailgate, rear-view camera and automatic parking assist. The Standard Range is currently available from £376.14 a month.
Mechanically the big step, with 402bhp and rear-wheel drive, though the kit list mirrors the Standard Range - same 19-inch "Aero" alloys, same leather upholstery, no extra equipment. Pick it for the larger battery and the longer WLTP range rather than for features. The Long Range is currently available from £444.65 a month. Against the Standard Range, that is currently £68.51/mo more expensive.
Then there's the performance version. With 741bhp and all-wheel drive, it's savagely quick - 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds - and it swaps to 20-inch "Sport" alloy wheels. It's a choice about character as much as distance. The Performance is currently available from £492.53 a month. Against the Long Range, that is currently £47.88/mo more expensive.
If the IM5 isn't quite right, the Polestar 2 covers similar ground as a sleek electric hatchback, while the CUPRA Born, BYD Dolphin and CUPRA Raval are smaller, cheaper-to-run alternatives. More MG models are on our MG leasing page.
