The CUPRA Raval is a small five-seat electric hatchback, and it's the smallest car CUPRA sells. At 4.05 metres long, it carries a 441-litre boot with the rear seats up.

It suits drivers who want a compact electric car that doesn't feel dull: city and commuter use most of the time, with enough space for a family of four at weekends. Reviewers consistently describe it as one of the more entertaining small EVs to drive.

The choice is straightforward. One body style, one electric powertrain family with a range of battery capacities, three everyday trims - Origin, V1 and V2 - and two performance versions, VZ and VZ Extreme.

About the CUPRA Raval

The Raval is CUPRA's entry point: a front-wheel-drive electric hatchback with five seats, five doors and a 441-litre boot, backed by a five-year or 90,000-mile manufacturer warranty. Range runs up to 276 miles on the WLTP test, depending on the version.

Road testers are unusually consistent about two things. First, that it's genuinely fun on a good road, with sharp steering and strong grip. Second, that the firm suspension makes itself known on poor surfaces, so a test drive over broken tarmac matters more here than it would with a softer rival.

Inside, the styling is deliberately loud - angular surfaces, contrast materials, copper detailing - and reviewers note rear space and boot volume that shame cars a class above. At 1.78 m wide, though, front occupants sit fairly close together.

Why lease a CUPRA Raval?

Because the safety and driver-assistance kit is standard across the range, so even the entry trim is well equipped. Every Raval gets adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition and rear parking sensors.

You also get a digital instrument cluster, DAB digital radio, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers on every version. Insurance groups run from 14 to 22 across the range, which is modest for a car that can be this quick.

Practically, it's a proper five-seater with a 441-litre boot, a turning circle of 10.9 to 11.0 metres and braked towing of up to 1,200 kg on the right version. Which Raval powertrain is right for me?

There's one answer here: the Raval is electric only, with a range of battery capacities and no petrol or hybrid option. It's automatic and front-wheel drive throughout, so the real decision is how much battery and how much power you need.

Electric

Battery capacity is 37.0 to 52.0 kWh, power 133 to 222 bhp, and WLTP range up to 276 miles on the best version. It needs plugging in - there's no engine as backup. The best version charges 10-80% in 24 minutes at 105 kW, or 0-100% in four hours on an 11 kW home supply.

Which Raval trim should I choose?

Pick on kit first and power second: Origin starts at 113 bhp, V1 and V2 move up to 133 bhp, while VZ and VZ Extreme bring the 222 bhp motor and the chassis hardware that goes with it.

Origin

The starting point, on 17-inch alloy wheels, with full LED headlights and high beam assist, wireless smartphone mirroring, leatherette trim, climate control, sports suspension and rear parking sensors. Deals for the Origin come and go, so ask our team what's available.

V1

V1 moves to 18-inch "Defier" alloys and adds built-in navigation, a heated leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with satellite buttons, heated front seats, front parking sensors and a wireless charger. Keyless entry and start, a rear-view camera, dual-zone climate, voice control and power-folding mirrors come too. A 360-degree camera, panoramic glass roof, heat pump and self-steering parking are options.

The V1 is currently available from £275.45 a month inc VAT.

V2

V2 sits on 19-inch "Maverick" alloys and adds the Sennheiser AMBEO immersive premium audio system with 12 speakers including a subwoofer. You also gain front sports seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory, and ambient lighting. Matrix LED headlights join the option list here.

Then come the two performance Ravals.

VZ

The VZ is the 222 bhp car, and the one reviewers rate as a proper small hot hatch: up to 6.8 seconds 0-62 mph, adaptive suspension and matrix LED headlights. It wears 19-inch REBEL machined alloys with copper accents and dark aluminium inserts, plus vegan leather with FEEL bucket seats.

The VZ is currently available from £363.25 a month inc VAT. Against the V2, that is currently £119.41/mo more expensive (inc VAT).

VZ Extreme

Mechanically the same 222 bhp car as the VZ, with the look changed rather than the performance: 19-inch REBEL alloys with sulphur accents and dark aluminium inserts. It also adds a towbar pre-installation, a 360-degree camera and self-steering parking, with the panoramic glass roof optional.

The VZ Extreme is currently available from £382.36 a month inc VAT. Against the VZ, that is currently £19.10/mo more expensive (inc VAT).

Yes, within limits. Braked towing capacity runs from 500 kg to 1,200 kg depending on version, and unbraked from 500 kg to 750 kg. The VZ Extreme includes a towbar pre-installation; on other versions, confirm the tow specification before you order.

CUPRA covers the Raval for five years or 90,000 miles, whichever comes first. That comfortably outlasts a typical lease term, which is one less thing to think about if you're keeping the car for three or four years.
