The line-up we price runs to six models in two body styles: four hatchbacks and two SUVs. Three are electric only, three offer a plug-in hybrid, and three are available with petrol.

Choosing is mostly a question of powertrain first, size second. Start with how you'll fuel it, then work out how much car you actually need.

The Formentor is the model that made the brand's name - a low-slung, coupe-shaped SUV with five seats, a 345 to 450-litre boot depending on version, and the choice of petrol or plug-in hybrid power. It's the one to look at if you want an SUV shape without the upright SUV feel.

CUPRA is the Spanish performance brand within the Volkswagen Group, selling sporting versions of familiar mechanical packages with distinctive design, driver-focused suspension tuning and cabins that reviewers often single out as the most characterful in the group.

Every model we price carries a 5-year / 90,000-mile manufacturer warranty, which is longer than the cover its sister brands typically offer and a genuinely useful thing on a longer lease.

The range spans a fair bit of ground for six cars, from the 4.05 m Raval up to the 4.66 m Leon, so there's something here for a tight city street and something for a family that needs proper rear-seat space.

Electrification is well advanced, too. Three models - Tavascan, Born and Raval - are electric only, and three more offer a plug-in hybrid. Reliability surveys have been a mixed story for the brand in recent years, which is worth knowing, though the warranty length softens that on a lease.

The CUPRA Formentor is the sporting coupe-SUV, about 4.45 m long, with five seats, a 345 to 450-litre boot depending on version and a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Petrol and plug-in hybrid versions are available, it tows up to 1,700 kg braked, and there are 7 trims. Deals start from £272.09 a month.

The CUPRA Tavascan is the electric coupe-SUV: 4.64 m long, five seats, a 540-litre boot and a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. It tows up to 1,800 kg braked and comes in 4 trims, which makes it the range's answer for a family that has charging sorted. Deals start from £366.71 a month.

Hatchback

The CUPRA Born is the electric family hatchback, 4.34 m long with five seats, a 385-litre boot and a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Reviewers regularly praise its motorway refinement. Three trims. Deals start from £298.04 a month.

The CUPRA Leon is the hot-hatch-flavoured one, around 4.40 m long, with petrol and plug-in hybrid options, five seats and a boot of 270 to 620 litres depending on version. There are 6 trims across 3 body styles, each with its own page, plus 5-star Euro NCAP and braked towing to 1,700 kg. Deals start from £234.29 a month.

The CUPRA Raval is the small electric hatchback at 4.05 m, with five seats, a 441-litre boot, braked towing to 1,200 kg and 5 trims. It's the obvious pick for tight streets and short, frequent journeys. Deals start from £258.97 a month.

The CUPRA Terramar is the family SUV of the hatchback group by feel if not by badge: 4.52 m long, five seats, a 400 to 540-litre boot depending on version, 5-star Euro NCAP and 5 trims, with petrol and plug-in hybrid power. It tows up to 2,200 kg braked. Deals start from £361.67 a month.

Electric and hybrid CUPRA models

Three CUPRA models are electric only and three offer a plug-in hybrid, so you can go fully electric or keep a petrol engine as backup. All six carry the same 5-year / 90,000-mile manufacturer warranty.

On the electric side, the Tavascan is the larger SUV option with its 540-litre boot and 1,800 kg braked towing limit, the Born is the 4.34 m family hatchback with a 385-litre boot, and the Raval is the 4.05 m small hatch with a 441-litre boot.

If charging isn't reliable where you park, the plug-in hybrid Formentor, Leon and Terramar give you electric running for shorter trips and petrol for everything else - which is why they tend to suit company car drivers and high-mileage households. Which CUPRA should you choose?

Work backwards from the job. The smallest is the Raval at 4.05 m, the longest is the Leon at 4.66 m, and the heaviest tow rating belongs to the Terramar at 2,200 kg braked. Everything else follows from powertrain.

Want the easiest one to park? The Raval, at 4.05 m, with a 441-litre boot and five seats.

Family duty? The Terramar gives you 400 to 540 litres depending on version, the Tavascan 540 litres, and the Leon 270 to 620 litres depending on body style. All three seat five and all three hold a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

Towing a caravan or trailer? The Terramar takes up to 2,200 kg braked. The Tavascan manages 1,800 kg, the Formentor and Leon 1,700 kg, and the Raval 1,200 kg.

Going electric? Pick between the Raval, the Born and the Tavascan by size. And if you're after seven seats, we can't help within this brand - every CUPRA we price is a five-seater.
