The BMW iX1 is BMW's compact electric SUV: a five-seat family car with a 490-litre boot, a 4.50 m body and up to 318.8 miles of WLTP range from its 66.5 kWh battery. It's the smallest, most conventional-feeling way into an electric BMW.
It sits at the entry point of BMW's electric SUV line-up, below the larger models, and appeals to drivers moving out of a petrol or diesel car for the first time.
The choice here is simple. One body style, one electric powertrain in front- or all-wheel-drive form, and four trims: Sport, xLine, M Sport and Shadow Edition.

The iX1 is the electric version of BMW's smallest SUV, and it makes its case on interior quality, cabin space and badge appeal rather than outright range. Five seats, 490 litres of boot space with the seats up and 1,495 litres folded, plus a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
Reviewers consistently praise the cabin - build quality, the twin-screen iDrive layout and generous head room front and back - and they consistently note two things on the other side: rivals offer more range for the money, and the ride can feel firm on bigger wheels. Road testers also rate the steering as precise, if not quite the last word in driver involvement.
The current iX1 has been on sale in this third-generation form since 2022.
Because every iX1 arrives well equipped and, on a lease, you sidestep the part of EV ownership most people worry about: what the car is worth in three or four years. That risk sits with the funder, not with you.
Standard across the range: heated front seats, a hands-free tailgate, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, roof rails and rain-sensing wipers. Safety and assistance kit includes autonomous emergency braking, active lane-change assist, a rear-view camera and front and rear parking sensors.
Practical details matter too: braked towing of up to 1,200 kg on the strongest versions, a 75 kg roof load and a turning circle of 11.7 to 11.9 metres. The battery carries its own eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty, and servicing falls due every 24 months. New to electric? Our electric car guide covers the basics before you order.
There's one powertrain, offered with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Every iX1 is fully electric, automatic, and needs plugging in - there is no petrol or hybrid option in this range.
A 66.5 kWh battery (64.8 kWh usable) gives 201 to 309 bhp depending on version, and WLTP range from 285 miles up to 318.8 miles. 0-62 mph ranges from 5.6 seconds at best to 8.6 seconds at the slower end, depending on specification.
Charging tops out at 130 kW, which returns 10-80% in 29 minutes on the best version. At home, the quickest versions manage 0-100% in 3.8 hours on a 22 kW supply - worth reading our guide to charging an electric car before you commit.
| Electric | |
|---|---|
| Boot | 490 litres |
| Power | 201–309 bhp |
| Seats | 5 |
| Battery | 66.5 kWh |
| 0–62 mph | 5.6–8.6 s |
| Braked towing | 750–1200 kg |
| Electric range (WLTP) | 284.6–318.8 miles |
Four trims, and the gaps between them are mostly about wheels, upholstery and styling rather than big jumps in equipment.
The entry trim, with 17-inch Star Spoke Style 864 alloys, cloth upholstery, heated front seats for driver and passenger, BMW Live Cockpit Plus with a 10.25-inch cluster and 10.7-inch display, electric heated door mirrors, a powered tailgate, self-steering parking and a wi-fi hotspot. The Sport is currently available from £303.01 a month inc VAT.
The xLine is a look, not a longer kit list: 18-inch Style 866 Aerodynamic alloys and artificial leather upholstery in place of cloth, on the same underlying specification. Options such as adaptive cruise control, an opening panoramic roof, keyless entry and start and wireless phone charging are available. The xLine is currently available from £375.72 a month inc VAT. Against the Sport, that is currently £72.71/mo more expensive (inc VAT).
M Sport adds an M sport leather steering wheel, part leather upholstery, adaptive suspension, sports suspension and front sports seats, on 18-inch Double Spoke Bicolour 838 M alloys. Road testers do flag that the sportier set-up firms up the ride, so try one if comfort is your priority. The M Sport is currently available from £350.05 a month inc VAT. Against the xLine, that is currently £25.67/mo cheaper (inc VAT). Best value
Shadow Edition builds on M Sport with Adaptive LED Headlights, automatic high beam, privacy glass and 19-inch Style 871 M Double Spoke alloys, keeping the part leather upholstery. The Shadow Edition is currently available from £591.42 a month inc VAT. Against the M Sport, that is currently £241.37/mo more expensive (inc VAT).
Beyond the trims, factory packs can be added: the 22kWCh Pack, Tech+ Pack, Tech+/22kWCh packs, Tech/Pro packs and Tech+/22kW packs. Which packs appear on a given contract varies, so check the specification on the individual deal. There are 12 paint colours across the range, from Alpine white and Mineral white to Cape York green, Portimao blue and Storm Bay.
If you're weighing the iX1 against other electric SUVs, our team also arranges the BYD Sealion 7, the Volkswagen ID.4, the OMODA 5 and the Ford Explorer. You'll find the rest of the range on our BMW leasing page.
