View dealThe BMW 4 Series Hatchback is the five-door, five-seat member of the 4 Series family: the same low, wide-shouldered styling as the two-door cars, but with rear doors, a 470-litre boot and a tailgate that lifts up to reveal a wide loading aperture.
It's aimed at drivers who want something more interesting to look at than a saloon without giving up back seats or luggage space. Reviewers consistently describe it as the version of the 4 Series that makes everyday sense, and they rate its handling among the sharpest in the class.
The choice here is simple: one body, petrol power with an eight-speed automatic, two everyday trims in M sport and M sport Pro, and two performance versions in the M440i and Black Edition. You can see the rest of BMW's line-up on our BMW leasing pages.

This is the current, second-generation 4 Series, on sale in this form since 2021. The Hatchback takes the coupe's proportions and adds two rear doors, a fifth seat and a hatchback tailgate, so it works as a daily car rather than a weekend one.
At 4.78 m long with a 2.86 m wheelbase, it's a compact executive car that road testers repeatedly praise for precise steering, strong body control and an unusually well-judged automatic gearbox. The common criticism is ride firmness on larger wheels, and rear headroom under that sloping roofline for taller adults.
Practical details back up the styling: 470 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, 1,290 litres with them folded, and a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
The Hatchback is the only 4 Series with five seats and five doors. It carries 470 litres in the boot against 440 litres in the 4 Series Coupe and 385 litres in the 4 Series Convertible, both of which seat four and have two doors.
The two-door cars are slightly shorter at 4.77 m and lower at 1.38-1.39 m, so they look sleeker and the Convertible adds a roof that drops. Braked towing is 1,600-1,800 kg across all three. Everything the range offers sits on our BMW 4 Series page.
Because the standard specification is genuinely deep, so you don't have to gamble on option packs to get a well-equipped car. Every version and trim has heated front seats, a powered tailgate, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety and assistance kit is standard too: autonomous emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, self-steering parking and LED headlights. Three-zone climate control, ambient lighting, sports suspension, front sports seats, a wi-fi hotspot, rain-sensing wipers and an electric parking brake are also fitted to every car.
On the practical side you get 470 litres of boot space, up to 1,800 kg of braked towing capacity, a 75 kg roof load and a 59-litre fuel tank. Servicing is every 24 months or 18,000 miles, and the spare is a tyre repair kit - worth knowing before you order if you cover rural miles.
There's one answer here: petrol. Nothing in this range plugs in or needs charging, and every version uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox, so the decision is really about how much power you want and whether you'd like all-wheel drive.
Power runs from 181 bhp to 387 bhp, with 300-540 Nm of torque, 0-62 mph in 4.6-7.9 seconds and a top speed of 146-155 mph. Engines are 2.0 to 3.0 litres, with four or six cylinders. WLTP economy is 38.2-42.2 mpg and CO2 is 153-168 g/km. Rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, depending on version. Still weighing up fuel types? Our petrol, diesel or electric guide is a sensible starting point.

Start with M sport if you want the look and the core kit, then step up only for the specific items you'll actually use.
The entry version is 181 bhp with rear-wheel drive, on 18-inch Aerodynamic Style 858 M alloy wheels with cloth upholstery. It brings a three-spoke flat-bottom M sport leather multifunction steering wheel, a park assist pack and an ambient lighting pack, plus wireless phone charging, automatic parking assist, climate control and voice control.
M sport Pro adds Adaptive LED Headlights, automatic high beam and privacy glass, and moves to 19-inch Y Spoke Style 859m alloy wheels. Adaptive cruise control, an opening panoramic roof, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry and start and a hands-free tailgate are all available as options.
Bigger wheels do firm up the ride, which road testers note on UK roads, so it's worth a test drive if comfort matters more to you than the look.
Then there are the fast ones.
The M440i is the 387 bhp six-cylinder petrol with all-wheel drive, good for 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds. Over M sport Pro it adds an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory, and rides on 18-inch Aerodynamic Style 858 M alloys. Lane-keep assist and active lane-change assist are optional.
Black Edition is an edition of the M440i, so you get the same 387 bhp all-wheel-drive petrol car with Adaptive LED Headlights and 19-inch M Double Spoke 861m alloy wheels. It's mainly about appearance rather than extra equipment.
A Tech Pack is offered as an optional add-on to a trim rather than a trim in its own right. If you're unsure how far up the range to go, our guide to choosing your car walks through spec, mileage and term together, and our team can talk it through.
If you're cross-shopping, the BMW 3 Series covers similar ground with a saloon boot, the BMW 2 Series sits a size below, the Audi A3 is the smaller premium hatchback option, and the Alfa Romeo Giulia is the style-led alternative.
Specifications from BMW's UK data; equipment, dimensions and availability vary by version, so check the individual deal before you order.
