The BMW 2 Series is the compact end of BMW's car range: small enough to enjoy on a back road, premium enough inside to justify the badge, and offered in three quite different shapes. If you want a BMW that feels special rather than sensible, this is usually where the search starts.
It suits drivers and couples first, families second. There are up to five seats depending on body style, a boot of 360 to 430 litres depending on version, and a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty behind it.
The choice is straightforward once you break it down: Hatchback, Coupe or Saloon body; petrol or plug-in hybrid power; then Sport, M Sport, Luxury or M Sport Pro, with the M235 and M240i for anyone chasing pace.

The current 2 Series, on sale in this form since 2024, is BMW's smallest car line and covers three body styles built around the same idea: compact dimensions, a driver-focused cabin and a wide spread of power, from 154 bhp to 387 bhp.
Reviewers consistently praise the steering and the way it changes direction - the 2 Series feels eager and compact on a narrow road in a way few modern cars do. The common criticism is ride comfort: on the larger wheels it can feel firm over poor surfaces, and rear headroom is tight on the sleeker bodies.
Practically, expect four or five seats depending on shape, servicing every 24 months or 18,000 miles, and Euro NCAP scores of four to five stars across the range.
Three shapes are on sale, and they are genuinely different cars to live with. The Hatchback is the practical one, the Coupe the indulgent one, and the Saloon the stylish middle ground with four doors and a separate boot.
Five seats, five doors and the most usable boot: 406 to 415 litres with the seats up, and 1,370 to 1,405 litres folded. At 4.39 m long it's the shortest of the three.
Two doors, four seats and a 390-litre boot. It's the longest-looking and lowest of the three at around 1.39 m tall, and it's the body that carries the 1,600 kg braked towing figure - the range's highest.
Four doors, five seats and a boot of 360 to 430 litres depending on version. At 4.55 m long with a 2.67 m wheelbase, it trades the Hatchback's wide tailgate opening for a cleaner, lower roofline.
Because every version arrives well equipped and the monthly rental keeps you in a car still under its three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty for the whole term. Heated front seats, a digital instrument cluster, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, DAB radio, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights are standard throughout.
On safety, Euro NCAP scored the 2 Series between four and five stars, with adult occupant protection of 78-88% and child occupant protection of 81-86%. Driver assistance kit varies by trim - blind-spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition come with M Sport, M Sport Pro and M235, autonomous emergency braking comes with M Sport, M Sport Pro, M235 and M240i, and adaptive cruise control is available as an option on every trim.
One contract point worth knowing: the spare is a tyre repair kit, not a wheel. If you tow, the Coupe is rated to 1,600 kg braked, and 750 kg unbraked across the range.
Two choices: petrol, or the plug-in hybrid, which pairs a small petrol engine with a 16.3 kWh battery and all-wheel drive. Both are automatic.
Power runs from 154 bhp to 387 bhp, with seven or eight-speed automatic gearboxes and front-, rear- or all-wheel drive depending on version. Official economy is 37.7 to 53.3 mpg and CO2 120 to 170 g/km. The straightforward pick if you can't charge at home.
A 1.5-litre turbo engine with a 16.3 kWh battery (14.2 kWh usable), 242 to 322 bhp, a seven-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. It charges at up to 11 kW, and the best version fills from 0-100% in 1.8 hours. Worth it only if you'll plug it in regularly.
If charging is new to you, our electric and hybrid leasing guides explain how home charging works alongside a lease.

Four everyday trims and two performance versions. Sport covers the essentials, M Sport adds the parking and cruise kit most drivers miss, Luxury is a styling choice, and M Sport Pro sharpens the lighting and the look.
The starting point, on 17-inch Star Spoke Style 875 alloys with cloth upholstery. It brings BMW Operating System 9 with remote services and smartphone integration, a widescreen display, a three-spoke sport leather steering wheel, heated front seats and ambient lighting front and rear.
The Sport is currently available from £454.58 a month.
Over Sport, M Sport adds park assist including reversing assistant, lateral parking aid and reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control with braking function, and a gearshift time display in manual mode. It moves to 18-inch M Y Spoke Style 975m alloys and Alcantara trim.
The M Sport is currently available from £284.35 a month. Against the Sport, that is currently £170.23/mo cheaper. Best value
Luxury is about appearance rather than extra equipment: 17-inch V Spoke Style 833 alloys and artificial leather upholstery over the Sport's standard kit. Choose it if you prefer a softer look to the M Sport treatment.
The Luxury is currently available from £474.85 a month. Against the Sport, that is currently £20.27/mo more expensive.
M Sport Pro adds adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist to M Sport, along with 19-inch M Y Spoke Style 976m alloys and privacy glass. The larger wheels look the part but do firm up the ride.
The M Sport Pro is currently available from £313.88 a month. Against the M Sport, that is currently £29.53/mo more expensive.
Then there are the performance 2 Series.
296 bhp of petrol power with all-wheel drive, on 18-inch M Y Spoke Style 975m alloys. Over M Sport Pro it adds a 12-speaker Harman Kardon HiFi loudspeaker system. Quick and grippy rather than raw - testers rate the chassis more highly than the engine note.
The M235 is currently available from £589.75 a month. Against the M Sport Pro, that is currently £275.87/mo more expensive.
387 bhp, all-wheel drive, launch control and sports suspension on 19-inch M Double Spoke Style 792 M alloys. The quickest petrol in the range does 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds. It also brings smartphone integration, a flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with a red centre mark, front and rear parking sensors, dynamic ambient lighting and touch operation on the control display.
The M240i is currently available from £610.21 a month. Against the Sport, that is currently £155.63/mo more expensive.
Packs sit on top of a trim rather than replacing one. The Tech+ Pack bundles adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist, Parking Assistant Plus with active PDC, remote 3D view and drive recorder, a wireless charging tray, head-up display and electrically adjustable, folding and heated mirrors; the Pro Pack covers the mirrors alone, and the Tech Plus Pack adds the head-up display.
