Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric cars made up almost 40% of the cacuprars produced in July, according to the SMMT.

Good News

It’s encouraging to see the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showing that UK car production had a significant boost in July, with a 31.6% increase.

This marks the sixth consecutive month of growth, which is fantastic news for the automotive sector. Despite the challenges faced by the industry, such as global chip shortages, it’s wonderful to see that the sector has been steadily recovering.

Over 76,000 new cars Delivered

UK car makers delivered 76,451 units of the latest models to buyers’ home and overseas, indicating a positive trend towards recovery. However, it’s worth noting that the output is still 29.4% lower than the pre-pandemic figure from July 2019.

In July, the manufacturing output in the UK increased by 13.7%, reaching 13,187 units. Meanwhile, the export figures showed a significant rise of 36.1%, with 63,264 units shipped overseas.

The majority of the cars produced (82.8%) were exported, with the main destination markets being the EU, US, China, Japan, and Australia. These countries accounted for almost 85% of all UK car exports in July.

EV and HEV are up 74% Since 2022

UK car makers are continuing to produce the latest high-tech hybrid electric (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) at a rapid pace.

In July, they produced 30,180 of these vehicles, a 73.9% increase from last year and representing almost two in every five (39.5%) cars made.

Since January, the total number of these vehicles produced has crossed the 200,000 mark, almost double the number produced during the same period last year. UK car makers have produced 526,619 cars, which is a 14.2% increase compared to the previous year.

Outlook Promising

According to the most recent independent production outlook, it has been reported that the total UK car production is estimated to reach around 860,000 units this year, marking a 10.9% increase from 2022.

Positive News for the Motor Manufactures

This is a positive sign for the sector, which has been struggling for the past three years due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Experts are hopeful that production will continue to recover, possibly reaching the one million mark by 2028.
