Cupra Born Performance

The entry-level model of the Cupra Born features a 45kWh battery that offers 211 miles of range and a motor delivering 148 bhp.

There’s a slightly faster 58kWh alternative that looks set to be the most popular choice that offers 260 miles of range, and power of 201 bhp to deliver a 0 to 62 mph sprint time of 7.3 seconds. Opt for the e-Boost package and this will fall to 6.6 seconds.

Range & Battery

The range-topper offers a more impressive sporty performance from the 77kWh battery with a range of 335 miles. The electric motor delivers power to sprint to 62 mph in seven seconds. Using a rapid recharger, the batteries can be recharged to 80% of capacity in around 30 minutes.

Standard Equipment

Drivers get a clear instrument panel that sits behind the steering wheel to show satnav instructions, battery range and the car’s speed. There are lots of touch-sensitive controls, even the steering wheel has touch-sensitive panels rather than physical buttons. Drivers will quickly get used to them but be wary about accidentally pressing a panel for something to work that you don’t want to.

The V2 offers larger wheels, a head-up display for the car’s information to be projected onto the windscreen, and privacy glass, while the range-topping V3 offers 20-inch wheels and front seats that can be electrically adjusted and have a massaging function.

Driving Experience

The sportier approach means that the Cupra Born offers a more involved drive than the VW ID.3, though this is a hatchback that is also a sound performer around town. As with a lot of electric cars, the Born delivers its torque instantly and the 0 to 30 mph sprint impresses. The car is a smooth accelerator when overtaking on motorways, and the tweaked chassis delivers grip and composure on winding country roads.

The sports seats hug the driver and front seat passenger and help to underpin the EV’s body control and accurate steering. There’s also more aggressive styling and the car sits lower than its ID.3 sibling with an interior that has been completely reworked to offer a comfortable and sport-oriented environment.

Safety

Safety features include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition and driver fatigue monitoring. The Born hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP yet, but the ID.3 scored five stars when it was tested, and the cars are very similar under the skin.

Interior

The interior looks great but there’s a different mix of premium materials to give it a classy look and feel. There’s also a sprinkling of copper accents which Cupra adds to its cars. There’s also lots of space onboard for passengers, particularly for legroom, and with no central tunnel, the flat floor helps those sitting in the rear seats.
