Volvo EX40 Lease Deals

The Volvo EX40 is Volvo's compact electric SUV: five seats, a 410-litre boot and up to 356 miles of WLTP range from a 69-82 kWh battery. This page explains the powertrain and the seven trims so you can pick the right version before you look at the live deals.

The Volvo EX40 is a five-seat electric SUV measuring 4.44 metres long, with a 410-litre boot and a WLTP range of up to 356 miles. It's aimed at drivers who want a compact, comfortable family EV with a premium feel rather than a sporty one.

In Volvo's electric line-up it sits between the smaller EX30 and the larger EX90, and it's the electric relation of the XC40 it shares its shape with. Road testers generally describe it as calm, quiet and easy to live with, particularly on the motorway.

The choice is simple: one SUV body, one electric powertrain family with rear- or all-wheel drive, and seven trims from Core up to the Black Edition versions.

About the Volvo EX40

The EX40 is Volvo's compact electric SUV: five seats, five doors, a 410-litre boot with the rear seats up and 1,286 to 1,400 litres with them folded, depending on version. It comes with a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty.

Reviewers consistently praise the seats, the cabin quality and the refinement at speed, and they're just as consistent in saying it isn't the car to buy if you want entertainment on a twisty road. Some note the ride can fidget on broken surfaces, more so on the 20-inch wheels.

Battery size runs from 69.0 kWh to 82.0 kWh, and the longest-range version is quoted at 356 miles on the WLTP test. Volvo covers the battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles.

Why lease a Volvo EX40?

Because the standard specification is genuinely generous, so you don't have to chase a high trim to get a well-equipped car. Every EX40 has adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, a powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation and a digital instrument cluster.

Safety kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. Apple CarPlay, DAB radio, dual-zone climate control, roof rails and rain-sensing wipers are fitted to every version.

For leasing customers the practical questions tend to be charging and mileage. The best version charges 10-80% in 28 minutes at 205 kW, and a full home charge takes 11 hours at 7.6 kW on that version - worth reading our guide to charging an electric car before you commit to an annual mileage.

Which EX40 powertrain is right for me?

There's one powertrain family - fully electric - with a choice of battery size and driven wheels, so the decision is about range and pace rather than fuel type.

Electric

Battery capacity runs from 69 to 82 kWh and power from 235 to 436 bhp, with rear- or all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. Range reaches up to 356 miles WLTP on the longest-legged version, and 0-62 mph takes between 4.6 and 7.3 seconds depending on which you choose. It needs charging; there's no petrol back-up.

Which EX40 trim should I choose?

Seven trims, and the honest answer is that Core already covers the basics, with the rest adding comfort, camera kit and black styling details.

Core

Core gets 19-inch 5 Double Spoke alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, wired Android Auto, heated front seats, front park assist, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beam. A 360-degree camera, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring, privacy glass and a retractable towbar are all available as options. The Core is currently available from £447.84 a month.

Plus

Plus adds Connect suede textile/microtech upholstery, keyless drive with keyless entry and start, and multi-directional lumbar support. It also brings heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory, a hands-free tailgate, blind-spot monitoring and a heat pump. The Plus is currently available from £414.83 a month. Against the Core, that is currently £33.01/mo cheaper. Best value

Plus Pro

Plus Pro adds active bending pixel LED headlights with adaptive shadow technology and a 360-degree surround view parking camera with side proximity sensors, plus rear cross-traffic alert and privacy glass. Wheels stay at 19 inches in the 5 Spoke style. The Plus Pro is currently available from £433.37 a month. Against the Plus, that is currently £18.54/mo more expensive.

Plus Black Edition

This is the Plus with a darker look: 20-inch 5 Spoke high gloss black alloy wheels and privacy glass. It's about appearance rather than extra equipment, and the 360-degree camera and retractable towbar remain options. The Plus Black Edition is currently available from £442.00 a month. Against the Plus, that is currently £27.17/mo more expensive.

Ultra

Ultra brings 20-inch 5 Spoke diamond cut black alloy wheels, active bending pixel LED headlights with adaptive shadow technology, the 360-degree surround view camera with side proximity sensors, and a power glass tilt and slide panoramic sunroof with sun curtain. That roof is the one thing no lower trim offers. The Ultra is currently available from £486.12 a month. Against the Plus Black Edition, that is currently £44.12/mo more expensive.

Ultra Black Edition

An Ultra finished in a darker style, with 20-inch 5 Spoke high gloss black alloy wheels and Connect suede textile/microtech upholstery. Everything else follows Ultra, including the panoramic roof. The Ultra Black Edition is currently available from £485.45 a month. Against the Ultra, that is currently £0.67/mo cheaper. Best value

Plus Pro Black Edition

A Plus Pro with 20-inch 5 Spoke high gloss black alloy wheels. It's also where the 436 bhp all-wheel-drive version sits, so this is the fast one - accelerative in a way that feels faintly absurd in a family SUV. The Plus Pro Black Edition is currently available from £527.23 a month. Against the Plus Pro, that is currently £93.86/mo more expensive.

Volvo EX40 FAQs

Yes, for families of four or five with modest luggage. It seats five, has a 410-litre boot and every version has autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and parking sensors front and rear. Reviewers rate the seats and the cabin storage highly.

It's 410 litres with the rear seats up, and between 1,286 and 1,400 litres with them folded, depending on the version. The car is 4.44 metres long with a 2.70-metre wheelbase, so it's compact enough for tight car parks.

Yes. Braked towing capacity is 1,500 kg to 1,800 kg depending on the version, with 750 kg unbraked and a 75 kg roof load. A retractable towbar is a factory option on every trim, so it has to be specified before the car is built - tell us at the order stage.

A heat pump is fitted from Plus upwards, not on Core. It heats the cabin more efficiently than a resistive heater, which matters most in winter when cabin heating eats into range. If you do a lot of cold-weather commuting, it's worth the step up. Our electric car guide explains why.

Volvo covers the car for 3 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, with an 8-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty, a 3-year paintwork guarantee and a 12-year anti-corrosion guarantee. There's no spare wheel; a tyre repair kit is supplied instead.

That depends on what's available at the time, and it moves as pricing is refreshed - the cheapest trim to lease isn't always the cheapest to buy. The entry Core is currently from £447.84 a month. Check the live EX40 deals below for today's position.
