View dealThe Toyota Proace City Verso is a van-derived family estate that puts space ahead of style. It seats five or seven depending on the version, swallows between 983 and 1,538 litres of luggage with the rear seats up, and is sold in the UK purely as an electric car.
It sits at the practical end of Toyota's line-up, below the larger Proace Verso and a world away from the brand's hybrid hatchbacks and SUVs. If you want school-run space and a low, square boot, it makes more sense than an SUV of similar length.
The choice is simple: one estate body, one electric powertrain with a 50 kWh battery and 134 bhp, and two trims - Icon and Design.

This is a small van turned into a people carrier, and it doesn't pretend otherwise. The boxy shape buys head and legroom that a conventional estate of similar length (4.40–4.75 m depending on version) simply can't match, so passenger and luggage space isn't compromised.
Reviewers consistently praise the amount of usable room, the low boot floor and the calm, quiet electric drive around town. The common criticisms are equally consistent: an electric range of up to 213 miles that's modest by current standards, and wind and road noise at motorway speeds.
Toyota covers it with a 3-year / 60,000-mile warranty, with the battery separately warranted for 5 years / 100,000 miles and guaranteed to hold at least 70% of its capacity.
Because every version arrives well equipped for family duty and the running costs suit drivers who mostly cover local miles. Built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, DAB radio and voice control are standard, as are roof rails, privacy glass and rear parking sensors.
The safety kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers and an electric parking brake. Insurance groups sit at 18-19.
On the leasing side, the things worth deciding before you order are mileage and seat count. We'd rather you set a realistic annual mileage now than pay excess mileage charges later, and it's worth being honest about whether you genuinely need the third row.
There's only one, so the question is really whether electric suits you. The Proace City Verso is battery-electric, automatic and front-wheel drive, with no petrol, diesel or hybrid alternative in the range.
A 50 kWh battery (45.4 kWh usable) gives a WLTP range of up to 213 miles, with 270 Nm of torque for easy town driving. Charging runs 0-80% in 30 minutes at 100 kW on the best version, or 0-100% in 7.5 hours from a 7 kW home charger. Efficiency is rated at 3.3 miles per kWh.

Two trims, and the gap between them is comfort kit rather than performance - both use the same 134 bhp electric drivetrain.
Icon rides on 16-inch steel wheels with cloth upholstery and air conditioning, and includes ECO LED headlamps, Toyota Touch 2 with Go navigation, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, multimedia and a driver monitoring camera. The Icon is currently available from £420.92 a month.
Design swaps the steels for 16-inch five-spoke alloys and adds a four-spoke leather steering wheel that's heated, plus keyless entry and start, a rear-view camera, dual-zone climate control, a heat pump, front fog lights and power-folding door mirrors. The Design is currently available from £481.34 a month. Against the Icon, that is currently £60.42/mo more expensive.
