The Citroën Berlingo is a van-based estate that puts space ahead of style. It comes with five or seven seats depending on the version, a boot ranging from 209 to 775 litres with the rear seats up, and a body that's about 4.40 m long in its shorter form - roughly family hatchback footprint, with far more room inside.

It sits at the practical end of Citroën's line-up, below and apart from the brand's crossovers and SUVs. If you regularly carry people, dogs, bikes, buggies or work kit, it does the job with less fuss than a similarly priced SUV.

The choice is straightforward: one body style, three powertrains - petrol, diesel or electric - and two trims, Collection and Max.

About the Citroën Berlingo

The Berlingo is the current, third-generation car, on sale in this form since 2023. It's the passenger version of Citroën's small van, and it has never pretended otherwise.

Reviewers consistently praise the same things: cavernous interior space, a high driving position with excellent visibility, and a ride tuned for comfort rather than corners. The usual criticism is hard cabin plastics and body lean - neither surprising given where it came from.

Practical details back that up. Boot volume runs from 209 to 775 litres with the rear seats in place depending on the version you pick, seven seats are available, and Citroën covers the car with a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty.

Why lease a Citroën Berlingo?

Because you get van-scale space with car equipment and a fixed monthly cost. Every Berlingo comes with a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a heated steering wheel, LED headlights and an electric parking brake as standard.

Driver assistance is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors. On a car this tall and boxy, the camera and sensors earn their keep every single week.

Practicality is the point. Five or seven seats depending on version, a tyre repair kit rather than a spare, and braked towing of up to 1,300 kg on the strongest diesel - enough for a decent caravan or trailer.

Which Berlingo powertrain is right for me?

Three choices: petrol for lower-mileage town and school-run use, diesel for long distances and towing, electric if you can charge at home or work.

Petrol

The 1.2-litre turbo petrol makes 109 bhp, drives the front wheels through a six-speed manual and returns 38.6 to 46.0 mpg depending on version. It's the simplest choice, with 775 litres of boot space seats up and braked towing of 1,150 kg. Best suited to shorter, mixed journeys.

Diesel

The 1.5-litre diesel spans 101 to 129 bhp, with a manual or automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive. Economy runs from 43.6 to 54.8 mpg, and braked towing reaches up to 1,300 kg. If you cover big motorway miles or pull a trailer regularly, this is the sensible pick.

Electric

The electric Berlingo pairs a 52 kWh battery with a 134 bhp motor and an automatic drive. Official range is up to 211 miles, and the best version charges 0-80% in 30 minutes at 100 kW, or 0-100% in 7.5 hours from a 7.4 kW home charger. Braked towing is 750 kg.

Collection

Collection brings 16-inch Starlit black alloy wheels, LED headlights, wireless mirror screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a heated leather-effect steering wheel with integrated controls, a 180-degree colour reversing camera, cloth upholstery and air conditioning. A panoramic glass roof, keyless entry and start, built-in navigation, dual-zone climate control and an auto-dimming mirror are all available as options.

The Collection is currently available from £344.39 a month.

Max

Max moves up to 17-inch Topaz alloy wheels and adds dual-zone climate control, privacy glass and roof rails over Collection, with cloth upholstery inside. Options include adaptive cruise control, front parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, paddle shifters, built-in navigation, keyless entry and start and the panoramic glass roof.

The Max is currently available from £401.03 a month.

Yes, and it's one of the few cars built around that job. Five or seven seats are available depending on the version, and reviewers regularly single out the interior space and high, clear driving position.

Between 209 and 775 litres with the rear seats up, depending on the version and seat layout you choose. Fold the seats down and capacity rises to between 3,000 and 3,500 litres. Check the individual deal for the exact figure on the version you're ordering.

It can. Braked towing ranges from 750 kg to 1,300 kg depending on the powertrain: the diesel is rated up to 1,300 kg, the petrol at 1,150 kg and the electric version at 750 kg. Unbraked towing is 735 to 750 kg.

Up to 211 miles on the official WLTP test from the 52 kWh battery. Expect less in cold weather or when fully loaded - it's a tall, boxy shape. Home charging takes 7.5 hours at 7.4 kW on the best version, and rapid charging covers 0-80% in 30 minutes at 100 kW.

Three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, plus a three-year paintwork guarantee and 12-year anti-corrosion cover. The electric version's battery is warranted for eight years or 100,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of its original capacity.
