View dealSmart spent its first couple of decades known for one thing: very small cars for very tight streets. The brand it is now builds electric SUVs, and the line-up we can lease today is three of them.
All three are Smart Hashtag models - the Hashtag 1, Hashtag 3 and Hashtag 5 - and all three are fully electric. They cover a fair spread, from 4.30 metres to 4.70 metres, so the badge no longer tells you much about the size of the car.
Choosing between them is mostly a question of how much car you need: start with the Hashtag 1 if parking space is your constraint, the Hashtag 3 if you want a bit more, and the Hashtag 5 if the boot has to swallow a family's worth of luggage.

Smart is an electric-only brand that now sells compact and mid-size SUVs. Every model we price is electric, and every one carries a 3-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
Reviewers consistently note the same things: strong performance even in the standard versions, interiors that feel closer to Mercedes than to the old city cars, and infotainment that takes some learning. Safety records well - each of the three models holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
The range spans 4.30 metres in the Hashtag 1 up to 4.70 metres in the Hashtag 5, which is a wider gap than most three-car ranges manage. And all three are rated to tow, which was never part of the brand's old story.
Three models, all SUVs, all electric. The Hashtag 1 is the compact one, the Hashtag 3 sits between the two, and the Hashtag 5 is the family-sized option with the biggest body and the deepest boot.
The Smart Hashtag 1 is the compact choice: 5 seats, a boot of 313 to 323 litres depending on version, and a length of about 4.27 metres that makes multi-storey car parks painless. Five trims, a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, and braked towing up to 1,600 kg. Deals start from £381.26 a month.
Step up to the Smart Hashtag 3 and you get a lower, longer shape at 4.40 metres, with 5 seats and a 370-litre boot. It suits drivers who want the sleeker body without a big jump in footprint, and it's offered in five trims with a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Deals start from £389.86 a month.
The Smart Hashtag 5 is the family car of the three: 4.70 metres long, 5 seats and a 630-litre boot, with six trims to pick from. It also carries a 5-star Euro NCAP rating and tows up to 1,600 kg braked. Deals start from £489.38 a month.
Every Smart we lease is fully electric. There is no petrol, diesel or hybrid option anywhere in the range, so moving to a Smart means moving to an EV - and the choice is about size rather than powertrain.
The Hashtag 1 is the compact way in at about 4.27 metres, with 313 to 323 litres of boot space depending on version. The Hashtag 3 stretches to 4.40 metres and 370 litres, and the Hashtag 5 to 4.70 metres and 630 litres. All three seat five and tow up to 1,600 kg braked.

Leasing is contract hire: you pay a fixed monthly rental to use the car for an agreed term and mileage, then hand it back. Depreciation, the single biggest cost of owning an EV, stops being your problem.
The warranty position is tidy across the whole range - 3 years, unlimited mileage, the same on every Smart we price - so a typical lease term sits comfortably inside it. The 8-year / 125,000-mile battery warranty guaranteeing 70% of capacity runs well beyond any lease.
You still arrange your own insurance and servicing, though maintenance can usually be built into the monthly rental if you'd rather keep everything in one payment. Our team has been arranging leases for over 25 years, and battery-related worry is one of the main reasons drivers lease rather than buy an EV.
Work backwards from what the car has to do. All three are five-seat electric SUVs, so the differences that matter are length, boot space and how many trims you have to choose from.
For town driving and tight parking, the Hashtag 1 is the one to look at - about 4.27 metres long, with a boot of 313 to 323 litres depending on version.
For a growing family, the Hashtag 5 makes the strongest case: 4.70 metres, 630 litres of boot space and six trims. The Hashtag 3 is the middle ground at 4.40 metres and 370 litres, for drivers who want more than the Hashtag 1 without the full family-SUV footprint.
Towing? The Hashtag 1 is the range's towing champion at up to 1,600 kg braked, and both the Hashtag 3 and Hashtag 5 are also rated to 1,600 kg braked, so the decision comes down to the rest of the car.
