City dwellers looking for a small car will struggle to find anything better than the ForTwo Cabrio to help them get around the busy streets. When it was first launched, the ForTwo Cabrio was ahead of its time and lauded for its quality of build along with its character and crash safety levels. However, nowadays the car still has no equal competitor but some may find the gearbox a struggle and the ride can be bouncy on some rough roads.
There's also not much space on board but there's no doubt that the ForTwo Cabrio is cheap to run and is well designed – it turns into a cute convertible because the roof is easily removed. With just two seats on board the ForTwo Cabrio is also the smallest convertible available and it can, literally, be parked anywhere. One of its original claims to fame is that it can be parked at right angles to the pavement since it is just 2.7 metres in length. It’s also cheap to run, the 1.0 litre petrol engine will return around 67mpg while the CDI diesel will return around 86mpg. There's also a hybrid version available which should return around 65 mpg.
Owners will soon discover the shortcomings of the ForTwo Cabrio should they endeavour to take it onto motorways or up steep hills since the engine noise becomes quite loud and some may find that at speed the sheer size of the car makes them feel vulnerable from other larger vehicles. The Smart car scored four marks out of five in the Euro NCAP crash tests and comes with driver and passenger airbags with electronic stability control as standard. And while the ForTwo Cabrio is made by Mercedes, its reputation for reliability is not the best though the latest models are a big improvement on the earlier versions. Essentially, the ForTwo Cabrio is a nippy vehicle, which has a tight turning circle, is agile and its quite good fun to drive in busy town traffic.
