The MG HS is a five-seat family SUV, around 4.66 metres long, with a boot of 507 to 630 litres depending on the version you choose. It's the mid-size SUV in MG's range, sitting above the brand's smaller crossovers, and it's aimed squarely at people cross-shopping the mainstream family SUVs.
There's one body style, so the real decisions are the engine and the trim. Three powertrains are available - petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid - across two trims, SE and Trophy, with an optional pack if you want extra comfort kit.
Every version is front-wheel drive, carries a 7-year / 80,000-mile manufacturer warranty and holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Below, we'll go through who each version suits.

The current HS, on sale in this form since 2024, is a conventional family SUV built around space and equipment rather than driving thrills. Five seats, five doors, a 2.77-metre wheelbase and a boot of up to 630 litres in the petrol versions.
Reviewers consistently praise the cabin - twin screens, soft-touch materials and genuinely generous rear legroom for the money - and they consistently note that the steering and ride are set up for comfort rather than involvement. Road testers also rate the plug-in hybrid as the pick of the range for its electric running.
The 7-year / 80,000-mile warranty matters on a long lease, and servicing falls due every 12 months or 15,000 miles.
Because the standard specification is unusually complete for the class. Every HS, whichever trim or engine, gets built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, keyless entry and start, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, LED headlights, privacy glass and roof rails.
The driver-assistance kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, automatic high beam, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors. Euro NCAP awarded five stars, with 90% for adult occupant protection and 85% for child occupants.
On practicality, every version will tow up to 1,500 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked, and the turning circle is 11.3 metres. Insurance groups run from 24 to 28 depending on version.
Three choices: a petrol, a self-charging hybrid that never needs plugging in, and a plug-in hybrid that does. All three are front-wheel drive, and only the petrol offers a manual gearbox.
The 1.5-litre turbo makes 167 bhp, comes as a manual or an automatic and returns 37.1 to 38.1 mpg on the WLTP test, with CO2 of 168 to 173 g/km. It's the simplest version, and the only one with the full 630-litre maximum boot. 0-62 mph takes 9.4 to 9.6 seconds.
A 1.5-litre turbo with a small 1.8 kWh battery and a two-speed automatic, producing 221 bhp. You never plug it in - the car charges the battery itself - and it records 51.3 mpg with 126 g/km of CO2. Good if you want lower fuel bills without a charger at home.
The 24.7 kWh battery makes this one worth charging: at 7 kW, the best version goes from 0-100% in four hours. With 295 bhp it's also the quickest HS, at 6.8 seconds to 62 mph. It suits drivers with off-street charging, and company car drivers should look at the CO2 figure.

Two trims, and both are well equipped. SE covers the essentials; Trophy adds the comfort and parking kit most people notice day to day.
SE brings 19-inch "Blade" diamond-cut alloy wheels, LED headlights, satellite navigation, Android Auto, a leather multi-function steering wheel, cloth upholstery and air conditioning. Plenty for most families. The SE is currently available from £356.45 a month.
Trophy adds three-stage heated front seats, a 360-degree parking camera, front parking sensors, wireless charging and a power tailgate, plus artificial leather upholstery, electric seat memory, dual-zone climate control and power-folding mirrors. The Trophy is currently available from £359.59 a month. Against the SE, that is currently £3.14/mo more expensive.
A pack can be added to a trim rather than replacing it. The Pan Roof Pack adds a panoramic opening sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats and the same mirrors.
