View dealThe Mercedes-Benz GLA is the compact five-seat SUV that sits at the accessible end of the Mercedes-Benz range: a raised, family-sized body with the brand's cabin tech, offered with petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid or fully electric power.
It suits drivers who want a premium badge and a comfortable, easy-driving car for school runs, commuting and the occasional long haul, without moving up to something the size of a GLC. Every version is automatic, and all-wheel drive is available on several of them.
The choice is simpler than it looks: one SUV body, four powertrains, seven everyday trims from Sport Edition up to AMG Line Premium Plus, and two performance AMG models.

The GLA is Mercedes-Benz's smallest SUV, a car-like crossover rather than an off-roader, built around five seats and a boot of 410 to 495 litres depending on which version you pick.
Reviewers have consistently praised the GLA for a smart, screen-led interior and comfortable, refined motorway manners, while noting it's a car chosen for comfort rather than corner-carving. Road testers also point out that rear space improved with the current GLA.
It's about 4.41 m long, carries a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, and comes with a 3-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty. Braked towing runs up to 2,000 kg on the strongest versions, which is unusual for a car this size.
Because the GLA arrives well equipped whichever version you choose, and leasing lets you hold a fixed monthly cost across the warranty period. Heated front seats, keyless entry and start, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every GLA.
So is the safety kit that matters day to day: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, automatic high beam, LED headlights and front and rear parking sensors. Euro NCAP awarded five stars, with 96% for adult occupant protection.
Practically, you get five seats, five doors, adaptive suspension and a tyre repair kit rather than a spare. Servicing is every 12 months or 12,500 to 15,500 miles depending on version, which is worth checking against your annual mileage before you order.
Four choices: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid or electric. All are automatic, and your decision mostly comes down to whether you can charge at home and how many motorway miles you cover.
Petrol GLAs run from 134 bhp to 415 bhp, automatic, with front- or all-wheel drive available. Nothing to plug in and nothing to plan around, so this is the straightforward option if your mileage is mixed and mostly local.
The 2-litre diesel produces 148 to 187 bhp, drives through an automatic gearbox and comes with front- or all-wheel drive. WLTP economy of 47.1 to 52.3 mpg makes it the sensible pick for high motorway mileage or regular towing.
A 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a 13 kWh battery gives 215 bhp, automatic, front-wheel drive. It does need charging to make sense: plug in at home and short trips can run on electricity, and company car drivers usually benefit most.
The electric GLA uses an 85 kWh battery, produces 268 to 349 bhp, and is automatic with rear- or all-wheel drive available. Electric range reaches up to 406 miles (WLTP) on the most efficient version, and rapid charging peaks at 320 kW. Our electric car guide covers charging basics.

Seven everyday trims and two AMG performance models, all sharing the same standard safety and infotainment kit, with wheels, seats, screens and driver aids marking out the differences.
The starting point, on 18-inch "5 Twin Spoke" alloys with artificial leather upholstery, heated front seats, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a driver monitoring camera, built-in navigation, a rear-view camera, climate control and a hands-free tailgate. The Sport Edition is currently available from £497.29 a month.
Same 18-inch "5 Twin Spoke" wheels and artificial leather, with blind-spot monitoring added - genuinely useful on a car with fairly thick rear pillars. The Sport is currently available from £529.74 a month. Against the Sport Edition, that is currently £32.45/mo more expensive.
Sportier looks on 19-inch "5 Twin Spoke" alloys, plus a flat-bottomed nappa leather multifunction steering wheel that's also heated, wireless phone charging, the keyless-go comfort package, dark privacy glass from the B-pillar back, interior ambient lighting and front sports seats. The AMG Line is currently available from £613.03 a month. Against the Sport, that is currently £83.29/mo more expensive.
The entry point to the electric GLA, on 19-inch "Multi Spoke" alloys. It brings a panoramic sunroof, digital MBUX smartphone integration, a leather multifunction sports steering wheel, park assist with reversing camera, front and rear sensors, adaptive cruise control and a heat pump; a fixed towbar is available as an option. The Sport Executive is currently available from £610.93 a month.
Front sports seats and AMG styling on 19-inch "Amg 5 Spoke" wheels, otherwise as Sport Executive, with the fixed towbar still on the options list. The AMG Line Executive is currently available from £634.04 a month. Against the Sport Executive, that is currently £23.11/mo more expensive.
Here the cabin steps up: ambient lighting that projects the brand logo, the 14-inch MBUX Superscreen front passenger display with touch controls, electrically adjustable front memory seats, dual-zone climate and 20-inch "Amg Multi Spoke" alloys. The AMG Line Premium is currently available from £723.74 a month. Against the AMG Line Executive, that is currently £89.70/mo more expensive.
The best-equipped everyday trim, adding Multibeam LED headlamps with adaptive high beam assist plus, park assist with surround view, a head-up display and a heated steering wheel, on 20-inch "Amg 5 Twin Spoke" wheels. The AMG Line Premium Plus is currently available from £763.04 a month. Against the AMG Line Premium, that is currently £39.30/mo more expensive.
Then come the two performance GLAs, both petrol and both all-wheel drive.
A 302 bhp petrol GLA on 20-inch "5 Twin Spoke" alloys, with MBUX augmented reality navigation, an AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather, cruise control with speed limiter and traffic sign recognition. Quick and planted rather than raw. The AMG is currently available from £848.75 a month. Against the AMG Line, that is currently £235.72/mo more expensive.
The 415 bhp flagship, 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds, on 21-inch "Cross Spoke" wheels. It adds Multibeam LED headlamps, a panoramic sunroof, the parking package with 360-degree camera, a full-colour head-up display, massaging seats and memory front seats with four-way lumbar support. The AMG S is currently available from £1,137.61 a month. Against the AMG, that is currently £288.86/mo more expensive.
