View dealThe Alfa Romeo Tonale is a five-seat compact SUV, 4.53 metres long, built to look and feel more Italian than the German crossovers it sits alongside. It's the smaller of Alfa Romeo's two SUVs, aimed at drivers who want a family-sized car with some character to it.
The choice is simple. One body style, two powertrains - a 172 bhp 1.5-litre turbo petrol driving the front wheels, or a 264 bhp plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive - and four trims: the Tonale entry model, Ti, Sport Speciale and Veloce.
Boot space runs from 385 to 500 litres with the rear seats up depending on which version you pick, and every Tonale is automatic. Below, we've set out what separates the powertrains and the trims so you can match a deal to how you actually drive.

The Tonale is Alfa Romeo's compact SUV, sitting below the larger Stelvio in the range. It seats five, carries 385 to 500 litres in the boot depending on version, and comes with a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
Reviewers consistently praise the way it looks and the way it changes direction - the triple-headlight face and dished alloy wheels are deliberate nods to older Alfas, and road testers generally rate its handling as keener than the compact SUV average.
The criticism is just as consistent: the ride is firm on poor surfaces, and testers who want cosseting comfort above all tend to point elsewhere. If styling and steering feel matter more to you than outright plushness, that trade is the whole appeal.
Because the standard specification is generous and consistent across the range. Every Tonale, in every trim, gets adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go, matrix LED headlights, keyless entry and start, a wireless charging pad, a digital instrument cluster and dual-zone climate control.
Driver assistance is well covered too: autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, a rear-view camera and front and rear parking sensors are fitted throughout, with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist and a 360-degree camera available as options on any trim.
On the practical side, every version seats five, the spare is a tyre repair kit, and servicing falls due every 12 months or 9,000 miles. The petrol can tow up to 1,500 kg braked; the plug-in hybrid is rated at 1,250 kg braked.
Two options, and the deciding question is whether you can charge at home. The petrol asks nothing of you beyond fuel; the plug-in hybrid rewards regular charging with much lower running costs and adds all-wheel drive and a good deal more performance.
The straightforward choice. It's a four-cylinder turbo with a seven-speed automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive, good for 0-62 mph in 8.5 seconds and WLTP economy of 48.7 to 49.6 mpg. No plug, no charging routine, the bigger 500-litre boot and the higher 1,500 kg braked towing limit.
This one has a 15.5 kWh battery and all-wheel drive, with a six-speed automatic. It's the quick one: 0-62 mph in 6.6 seconds. The best version charges from 0-100% in around 2.5 hours at 7.5 kW, so an overnight top-up at home is straightforward. The boot is 385 litres.
If you can't plug in regularly, a plug-in hybrid rarely makes sense. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides go through that decision in more detail.

Four trims, and they differ mainly in wheels, upholstery and cabin comfort rather than in safety kit, which is broadly the same throughout.
Better equipped than most entry trims. It has 17-inch "Aero Diamond Finish" alloy wheels and cloth upholstery, plus traffic sign recognition with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a sport leather steering wheel with start button, adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go and a wireless charging pad.

Ti adds the 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, USB, Bluetooth audio streaming and voice control, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, privacy glass, paddle shifters and backlighted ambient lighting. Wheels are 18-inch "Petali Diamond Cut" alloys, with leather upholstery.
The Ti is currently available from £505.09 a month.
Sport Speciale is mostly about appearance rather than extra equipment. It brings 20-inch "Fori Diamond Cut" alloy wheels and Alcantara upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with ice stitching and start button, and ambient light graphics in the cabin.
The Sport Speciale is currently available from £522.59 a month. Against the Ti, that is currently £17.50/mo more expensive.
Veloce swaps to 19-inch "Dark Miron Finish" alloys and leather upholstery, with a sport leather steering wheel and start button, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting with backlighted film, and two-way electric lumbar support for the driver. Worth a look if you spend long stints behind the wheel.
The Veloce is currently available from £505.02 a month. Against the Sport Speciale, that is currently £17.57/mo cheaper. Best value
