The Mercedes GLA has a choice of three petrol units and a two diesel engines. The 2.1 litre diesel unit has a choice of either 136 HP or 177 HP with fuel economy of 67 mpg and emissions from 108g/km. The petrol engines offer a range of outputs from 156 HP to the range topping GLA 45's impressive 381 HP. Fuel economy is around 50 mpg with emissions of 131g/km for the petrol units - though a lot less for the AMG-tuned GLA 45 if it is put through its paces.
Equipment and handling
The Mercedes GLA offers a comfortable ride to help make it a sound choice for families with good grip around town and it's a decent performer on motorways, too. It's an unusual design for a crossover and resembles a hatchback with a higher stance and it's based on the Mercedes A-Class. There's a lot of equipment with the standard spec including a reversing camera, 'keyless-go', smartphone connectivity and an impressive off-road comfort suspension. Other models come with satnav and parking pilot, panoramic sunroof and high-performance headlights. There are also special editions available with a range of attractive features, including black leather upholstery, larger alloy wheels and safety assistance systems. The cabin has lots of space and it's a well-designed and comfortable place to spend time and everything has a solid feel which is geared towards delivering a hard-wearing environment for regular family use. Essentially, the Mercedes GLA is an attractive car to look at and enjoy as a family carrier with lots of equipment, even on the entry level models, making it a value for money offering.
