The BMW X2 is a compact five-seat SUV with a coupe-style sloping roofline, sold in one body shape and powered by petrol engines of 168 to 296bhp, all automatic. It's the style-led alternative to the boxier BMW X1.

It suits drivers who want a premium badge and a sharp-looking car at family-hatchback footprint - about 4.55m long - without giving up much practicality. Boot space runs from 515 to 560 litres depending on the version, with 1,400 to 1,470 litres available once the rear seats are folded.

The choice is simple. One body, one fuel type, and two trims: M Sport, and the 296bhp M35i for drivers who want the performance version.

About the BMW X2

The current X2 is the second-generation car, on sale in this form since 2023. It's a coupe-SUV: a raised five-door body with a tapering roof, front- or all-wheel drive depending on version, and a 7-speed automatic gearbox throughout.

Reviewers consistently praise the cabin quality and the big curved twin-screen layout, and note the steering has more feel than most small SUVs. The common criticisms are restricted rear visibility and a firm ride, particularly on the largest wheels.

Practically, it's better than the shape suggests. Five seats, a boot that reaches 560 litres on some versions, up to 1,800kg of braked towing on the strongest, and a 3-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.

Why lease a BMW X2?

Because every X2 arrives well equipped, so you're not building a shopping list of options to get a usable car. Heated front seats, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wi-fi hotspot and dual-zone climate control are standard across the range.

So is the safety kit, which is why the X2 holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating - 85% for adult occupant protection, 88% for child occupant and 92% for safety assist. Autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist and traffic sign recognition are fitted to every version.

Parking matters in a car with a narrow rear window: front and rear sensors plus a rear-view camera are standard, along with a hands-free tailgate, adaptive suspension, LED headlights and ambient lighting. Note the spare is a tyre repair kit, not a wheel.

Which X2 powertrain is right for me?

There's one fuel to consider: petrol. Nothing here plugs in, so there's no charging to arrange, no home wallbox and no range planning - you fill a 54-litre tank and drive.

Petrol

Power runs from 168bhp to 296bhp, with 280 to 400Nm of torque, 0-62mph in 5.4 to 8.3 seconds and a 7-speed automatic on every version. Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive is available. WLTP economy is 36.2 to 47.9mpg and CO2 132 to 186g/km, depending on the version you pick.

Which X2 trim should I choose?

There are two, and they answer different questions: M Sport covers the range's everyday specification, while the M35i is the performance version with all-wheel drive.

M Sport

M Sport starts at 168bhp with front-wheel drive, on 19-inch "Style 871 M Double Spoke" alloys and part-leather upholstery. Standard kit includes smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an M leather steering wheel, heated front seats, electric heated door mirrors, a powered tailgate and self-steering parking.

The M Sport is currently available from £531.71 a month.

Worth knowing before you order: adaptive cruise control, a fixed panoramic glass roof, heated steering wheel, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory and rear cross-traffic alert are all factory options here, as are the Tech and Pro packs and the Tech Plus Pack. Factory options must be specified when the car is built, so decide early.

M35i

Then there's the performance X2. The M35i has 296bhp and all-wheel drive as standard, 20-inch "Style 873 M V Spoke" alloys, part-leather upholstery, privacy glass and a Harman Kardon HiFi loudspeaker system over the M Sport.

The M35i is currently available from £663.86 a month. Against the M Sport, that is currently £132.16/mo more expensive.

Road testers find it genuinely fast and grippy, with well-weighted steering, but consistently flag the firm low-speed ride on those 20-inch wheels. If you live somewhere with speed bumps and broken tarmac, try one before committing. The same option list as M Sport applies, including adaptive cruise control and the panoramic roof.

BMW X2 FAQs

For a family of four, yes. It has five seats, a 5-star Euro NCAP rating with 88% for child occupant protection, and a boot of 515 to 560 litres depending on version. The sloping roof does trim rear headroom compared with a square-backed SUV.

Between 515 and 560 litres with the rear seats up, depending on the version, rising to 1,400 to 1,470 litres with them folded. A hands-free tailgate is standard across the range, which helps when your hands are full.

No. Every X2 on this page is petrol with a 7-speed automatic gearbox, so there's no plug and no charging routine - just a 54-litre fuel tank. WLTP economy is 36.2 to 47.9mpg depending on which version you choose.

It can tow up to 1,800kg braked on the strongest versions, or 750kg unbraked, but the limit varies by version and starts at 750kg braked - so check the figure for the exact derivative before you order. A tow bar is a factory-fit item worth specifying up front.

Three years with unlimited mileage from BMW. That covers a typical lease term comfortably, including high-mileage contracts. Servicing isn't included in a standard lease, so ask our team about adding a maintenance package if you'd rather budget it monthly.

It depends entirely on what's available at the time, and the order can change when pricing is refreshed. The M Sport is currently from £531.71 a month. Check the live X2 deals below, and our guide to choosing your car covers picking a term and mileage that fits.

Wheel size and options. The M35i's 20-inch alloys firm up the ride, and items like adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and the panoramic roof are factory options that can't be added later. Our guide to running a lease car explains what else to plan for.

Specifications from BMW's UK data and Euro NCAP; equipment, towing limits and availability vary by version, so check the individual deal. FVL has arranged vehicle leases for over 25 years.
