The CLA Coupe is the current, second-generation car, on sale in this form since 2026. It's a four-door coupe: five seats, four doors, roughly 4.69 m long, with a 445 to 460-litre boot depending on which version you pick.

Reviewers consistently praise the cabin - screen-heavy, divisive at first glance, but built from materials that feel a class above - and the way the car drives, which is composed and refined rather than hyperactive. The recurring criticism is rear headroom, a direct consequence of the shape.

CLA Coupe or CLA Estate or CLA Saloon?

Pick the Coupe for the shape. Choose one of the others if you need more room: the CLA Estate has five doors, 455 to 505 litres behind the rear seats and up to 1,370 litres folded, plus braked towing of up to 2,400 kg on the strongest version.

Which CLA Coupe powertrain is right for me?

Two engines, both 2-litre four-cylinders, both automatic, and neither needs plugging in. The split is straightforward: diesel for mileage, petrol for pace.

Petrol

The 2-litre turbo petrol produces 302 to 415 bhp with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic, covering 0-62 mph in 4.1 to 4.9 seconds. Official economy is 31.4 to 33.6 mpg with CO2 of 190 to 204 g/km, and insurance sits in groups 37 to 41.

Diesel

Which CLA Coupe trim should I choose?

There are four everyday trims and one performance version, and the jump from AMG Line to AMG Touring Edition is also the jump from diesel to petrol power.

Sport

Sport starts with the 187 bhp diesel and front-wheel drive, on 18-inch Multi Spoke alloys with artificial leather upholstery. Heated front seats, smartphone integration, climate control, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and self-steering parking are all included.

AMG Line

AMG Line keeps the 187 bhp diesel but swaps to 18-inch AMG 5 Twin Spoke alloys in high-sheen black. It adds wireless phone charging, keyless entry and start, ambient interior lighting, a hands-free tailgate, paddle shifters and front sports seats.

AMG Touring Edition

This is where the petrol range begins, at 302 bhp with all-wheel drive. Against Sport it brings 19-inch AMG 5 Twin Spoke alloys in gloss black, an AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather, wireless charging, keyless go, dual-zone climate, ambient lighting and front sports seats.

AMG

AMG builds on the Touring Edition with MBUX augmented reality navigation, electrically adjustable front memory seats with four-way lumbar support, a heated steering wheel and traffic sign recognition. Same 302 bhp starting point, same 19-inch AMG 5 Twin Spoke wheels.

AMG S

Then there's the performance version. AMG S runs the 415 bhp petrol with all-wheel drive, 0-62 mph in as little as 4.1 seconds and 19-inch AMG Cross Spoke alloys, plus Multibeam LED headlamps, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, an opening panoramic roof and massaging front seats. Adaptive cruise control and active lane-change assist are available as options.
