When Mercedes decided to revamp its rather dour C-Class it was responding to a gauntlet that had been thrown down by BMW and the result is a cracking car. The C-Class has a well-designed and well-made interior and the equipment levels are very generous added to a range of very efficient and frugal engines. However, the C-Class is tad pricier than many of its competitors and the smaller engines are louder than the bigger ones because of all the weight they are having to move. Some may also find that the drive is uninspired but the car does what it sets out to do very well.
Most of the models in the line-up are very impressive and make the C-Class a great all-rounder. There's no doubting that this is a Mercedes since it bears the new with the stylish grill and bumpers. The saloon, in four door version, is the most popular choice though buyers can also select the practical estate or the lovely looking coupe. There are four spec levels, three of which are AMG creations with the C63 AMG C-Class being the fastest - if you like life in the fast lane then be aware that this car will reach 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.
As you would expect in this competitive sector, all of the models in the C-Class range are very well equipped and standard kit includes things like Bluetooth connectivity, air con and alloy wheels. Of the engines, and they are two petrol and three diesel, perhaps the best choice is the C220 CDI diesel which will return around 69 mpg and emits only 117g/km of CO2. This engine will also see the car will reach 0 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, mainly down to its pair of turbochargers. Also fitted as standard to help boost economy on the C-Class is stop-start technology. To help the C-Class win over new fans, it carries over a level of luxury few other rivals can match. Most of its influence appears to be from the impressive Mercedes S Class which also means that the car is comfortable to drive and it’s also to be a pleasure to be a passenger in. There's lots of space inside, the suspension performs well and it's an excellent car for long journeys, but especially on motorways.
