The Kia EV9 is a full-size electric SUV with six or seven seats, and it sits at the top of Kia's range. If you need three rows of seats that adults can actually use, and you want to go electric, it belongs on your shortlist.

Every EV9 is a five-door SUV with a 99.8 kWh battery, an automatic drive and either rear- or all-wheel drive. Power runs from 200 bhp to 502 bhp, with a WLTP electric range of up to 349 miles.

The choice is simpler than the car's size suggests: one body, one battery, and two trims - Air and the more powerful GT-Line.

About the Kia EV9

The EV9 is Kia's flagship: a 5.01-metre electric SUV built around family life rather than around a badge. It has been on sale in this form since 2023, and it remains one of the few genuinely large three-row EVs you can lease.

Reviewers consistently praise the space, the quiet, comfortable way it drives and the usable third row. The common criticisms are its sheer size in town and interior materials that don't quite match German rivals at the same money.

Behind the third row there's 333 litres of boot space, and Kia covers the car with a seven-year / 100,000-mile warranty, with the battery guaranteed to 70% of capacity for eight years or 100,000 miles.

Why lease a Kia EV9?

Because the EV9 is expensive to buy outright and leasing spreads it over fixed monthly rentals, with the warranty running the length of most contracts. It's also very well equipped, which removes a lot of the option-box guesswork.

Every version has adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, self-steering parking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking as standard.

Comfort kit is just as generous: heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a heat pump, built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, a powered tailgate and keyless entry and start, on every trim.

Which EV9 powertrain is right for me?

There's only one: the EV9 is electric, with no petrol, diesel or hybrid version. What changes between versions is how much power you get and whether the drive goes to the rear wheels or all four.

Electric

The 99.8 kWh battery gives a WLTP range of 313 to 349 miles depending on version, with 200 to 502 bhp, 0-62 mph in 4.6 to 9.4 seconds and automatic drive. It needs charging - ideally at home overnight - and suits families doing regular long runs as much as school runs.

Which EV9 trim should I choose?

Air covers the essentials; GT-Line adds all-wheel drive, more power and a smarter cabin.

Air

Air is the 200 bhp rear-wheel-drive version, on 19-inch alloy wheels, with artificial leather upholstery, LED headlights with adaptive driving beam, navigation-based smart cruise control with stop and go, dual-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, automatic parking assist and paddle shifters.

The Air is currently available from £732.74 a month.

GT-Line

Then there's the quicker one. GT-Line is the 378 bhp all-wheel-drive EV9, on 20-inch alloys, with small cube LED headlights with adaptive driving beam, two-tone artificial leather, and a power-adjusted driver's seat with memory plus a powered front passenger seat.

The GT-Line is currently available from £796.44 a month. Against the Air, that is currently £63.70/mo more expensive.

Kia EV9 FAQs

Yes. It seats six or seven depending on version, the third row is usable by adults on shorter trips, and heated rear seats, privacy glass and a 360-degree camera are standard. At 5.01 m long and 1.98 m wide, though, measure your garage and parking space first.

There's 333 litres behind the rearmost seats, which handles a supermarket run with all seven aboard. Fold the rear rows and it opens up to between 2,318 and 2,393 litres depending on version - van territory for flat-pack furniture or bikes.

It can, but check the version carefully. Braked towing across the range runs from 900 kg up to 2,500 kg depending on version, so check the figure for the exact model you want. Towing also cuts electric range noticeably, so plan charging stops around it.

On a 210 kW rapid charger the best version goes from 10-80% in 24 minutes. At home on an 11 kW supply, 10-100% takes 9.1 hours, so overnight charging is the sensible routine. Our guide on how to charge an electric car explains the connector types.

Kia's warranty runs seven years or 100,000 miles, with the battery separately covered for eight years or 100,000 miles to 70% of capacity. Servicing is every 24 months or 20,000 miles. Note the spare is a tyre repair kit, not a wheel.

It depends entirely on what's available at the time - rentals move with term, mileage, initial rental and stock, and the order of trims can change week to week. The honest answer is to check the current EV9 deals below, or ask our team to run the versions side by side.

It isn't cheap. EV9s sit in insurance groups 45 to 50 depending on version, which is high, so get a quote before you commit - fully comprehensive cover is a condition of every lease contract, and it's easily overlooked.
