The Citroën C3 is a five-seat, five-door small hatchback with an upright, faintly SUV-ish stance, built first and foremost for town driving, school runs and short commutes. It's the smallest car in Citroën's range, and the choice in front of you is refreshingly simple: petrol or electric, and three trims.

Comfort is the whole point of this car. Reviewers consistently single out the soft suspension and deep-padded front seats, and the ride over broken urban roads is the quality road testers return to again and again.

One body style keeps things tidy. You pick a 1.2-litre turbo petrol or the 111 bhp electric version, then choose between Collection, Plus and Max.

About the Citroën C3

The C3 is Citroën's small hatchback and has been the brand's volume seller for two decades. This is the fourth-generation car, on sale in this form since 2024, and it's sold here in one body: a 4.02-metre, five-seat, five-door hatch.

What reviewers praise is consistent - the ride quality, the airy high-set driving position and the amount of space squeezed into a short car. What they criticise is just as consistent: hard cabin plastics in places, and performance that's adequate rather than brisk.

Practically, you get a 310-litre boot with the rear seats up, 1,188 litres with them folded, and a 10.6-metre turning circle that makes multi-storey car parks less of an event. Every C3 comes with a three-year, 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty.

Why lease a Citroën C3?

Because the standard specification is generous for a small car and there's very little you need to add. Every C3, whatever the trim or powertrain, has the kit most drivers actually use day to day, which makes choosing a version much less fraught.

Across the range you get the head-up display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB digital radio, air conditioning, LED headlights with automatic operation and automatic high beam, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding door mirrors, roof rails, an LED third brake light and rear parking sensors. Autonomous emergency braking is fitted to every version too.

Which C3 powertrain is right for me?

There are two: a 1.2-litre turbo petrol and an electric version. Petrol suits drivers who cover varied distances and don't want to think about charging; electric suits shorter, predictable journeys where you can plug in at home or at work.

Petrol

A 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo with 99-108 bhp and 205 Nm, driving the front wheels through a six-speed manual or an automatic. WLTP economy runs from 46.0 to 56.5 mpg depending on version, 0-62 mph takes 9.8-10.6 seconds, and it'll tow up to 600 kg braked.

Electric

One 111 bhp motor, an automatic, front-wheel drive, and a 30 to 44 kWh battery giving up to 201 miles of WLTP range on the best version. Which C3 trim should I choose?

Three trims: Collection, Plus and Max. Collection and Max are the petrol-led choices, Plus is the entry point on the electric car, and the differences come down to wheels, upholstery and a handful of convenience features rather than anything mechanical.

Collection

The starting point, and better equipped than "entry-level" suggests. It has 17-inch black painted Atacamite alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts, LED headlights with electric levelling, cloth and leather-effect upholstery, privacy glass, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors. The Collection is currently available from £272.22 a month.

Plus

Plus is the entry trim on the electric C3, with the 111 bhp motor, 17-inch diamond-cut Atacamite alloy wheels and cloth upholstery rather than the part-leather finish used elsewhere in the range. It's the straightforward way into an electric C3. The Plus is currently available from £279.47 a month.

Max

Max moves to 17-inch diamond-cut Atacamite alloys and adds the convenience kit: wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, front fog lights, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and an electric parking brake, with part-leather upholstery. The Max is currently available from £274.09 a month. Against the Collection, that is currently £1.87/mo more expensive.
