The choice here is refreshingly simple. One body style, one powertrain - a 2-litre self-charging hybrid with 134bhp and an automatic gearbox - and three trims: Limited, Field and Touring.
If you want a car that shrugs off a muddy track, tows a trailer and carries a family without fuss, it's worth a look. If you mostly commute on motorways and care about outright pace, read the powertrain section carefully first.

The Forester is the sixth-generation version of a nameplate that helped invent the rugged family SUV. It's 4.67m long, seats five, and carries 508 litres of luggage with the rear seats up, rising to 1,796 litres folded.
Reviewers consistently praise the same things: genuine off-road ability from the all-wheel-drive system, excellent all-round visibility thanks to the deep glass and slim pillars, and build quality that feels made to last rather than made to impress. The common criticisms are equally consistent - modest performance and fuel economy that lags the best hybrid rivals.
Subaru covers it with a 3-year or 60,000-mile warranty, and servicing falls due every 12 months or 12,000 miles.
Because every Forester arrives with the kit that matters already fitted, and leasing lets you run one on a fixed monthly cost across the warranty period rather than owning it into the years when a hard-working 4x4 starts costing money.
Every version gets adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist and active lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam. It scored five stars in Euro NCAP testing, with 83% for adult occupant protection, 89% for child occupants, 86% for vulnerable road users and 72% for safety assist.
Comfort kit is standard too: heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory, keyless entry and start, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control and roof rails. Note the spare is a tyre repair kit, not a wheel.
There's only one, so the decision is really whether it suits how you drive. The Forester is sold solely as a self-charging hybrid with all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox.
A 2-litre petrol engine paired with a 0.6kWh battery, producing 134bhp and 182Nm through a 7-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. It never needs plugging in - the battery tops itself up as you drive.
Expect 0-62mph in 12.2 seconds, 116mph, 34.9mpg on the WLTP cycle and 183g/km of CO2. It's an unhurried car, and the high CO2 figure makes it an expensive company car choice, so it suits private drivers who value traction and towing over speed. Braked towing is 1,870kg (750kg unbraked), insurance group 23.

All three share the same engine, all-wheel drive and safety kit, so you're choosing upholstery, wheels and convenience features rather than capability. Limited is the well-equipped starting point, Field adds the useful everyday extras, Touring adds glass and leather.
Cloth upholstery, 18-inch dark metallic grey machined alloy wheels, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with silver stitching, heated front seats and a 360-degree surround camera. Genuinely enough car for most buyers. The Limited is currently available from £568.76 a month.
Field swaps to artificial leather upholstery and 18-inch dark metallic grey alloys, and adds built-in satellite navigation, a heated steering wheel with green stitching, rear privacy glass and a hands-free tailgate - the one that earns its keep when your arms are full. The Field is currently available from £586.19 a month. Against the Limited, that is currently £17.42/mo more expensive.
Touring brings leather upholstery, 19-inch dark grey machined alloy wheels, heated rear seats, a brown-stitched steering wheel and a power sliding and tilting UV glass sunroof, which transforms how light the cabin feels. The Touring is currently available from £648.71 a month. Against the Field, that is currently £62.52/mo more expensive.
