It sits alongside the MG4 hatchback in MG's line-up rather than replacing it, and takes a deliberately different approach: front-wheel drive, modest power, a roomier cabin. Road testers consistently point out how much car you get for the space it occupies on a driveway.
The choice is straightforward. One body style, one electric powertrain, and two trims - Comfort and Premium.

The MG4 Urban is MG's practical, no-nonsense electric family car. It's front-wheel drive, automatic, and sold only as a five-door with five seats and a 577-litre boot.
Reviewers are consistent about what it does well: interior space that shames cars of a similar footprint, a decent standard equipment list, and easy, undemanding manners around town. They're equally consistent that it isn't a car for keen drivers - the ride can feel busy and there's more road noise than in pricier electric hatchbacks.
MG backs it with a seven-year or 80,000-mile warranty, with the battery covered for the same period and guaranteed to hold at least 70% of its capacity. Servicing falls every 12 months or 15,000 miles.
Because the equipment you actually use is standard across the range, and a lease keeps you inside the seven-year warranty period throughout. Every MG4 Urban has adaptive cruise control, built-in navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control and a heat pump.
Driver assistance is unusually complete for a car this size: blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition, autonomous emergency braking and automatic high beam are fitted to every version, along with a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors.
Practically, you get roof rails, keyless entry and start, a 10.5-metre turning circle and 1,364 litres of load space with the rear seats folded. Towing is limited to 500 kg braked, so it's a bike rack and small trailer car, not a caravan tug.
There's one powertrain here - fully electric, automatic, front-wheel drive - offered with two battery sizes, so the real decision is how far you need to go between charges.
Battery capacity runs from 42.8 kWh to 53.9 kWh, with 147-158 bhp and WLTP range from 201 miles up to 258 miles depending on the version. It's a fully electric powertrain with no clutch and no gear changes, and no petrol station visits either.
Charging matters more than outright pace. The best version rapid charges from 10-80% in 28 minutes at 150 kW, and a 7 kW home wallbox takes it from 10-100% in around 7.5 hours - an overnight job. Our guide to charging an electric car covers the practicalities if this is your first EV.
Performance is adequate rather than brisk: 0-62 mph takes 9.5-9.6 seconds and top speed is 99 mph. Official efficiency is 4.0 miles/kWh. If you mostly do school runs, commutes and the occasional longer trip, that's plenty.

Two trims, and the gap between them is comfort kit rather than capability. Comfort covers the essentials properly; Premium adds the winter equipment and parking aids.
Comfort rides on 16-inch alloy wheels with cloth upholstery, and includes full auto LED headlights with auto low/high beam and a follow-me-home function, satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a reversing camera. Its entry version produces 147 bhp.
The Comfort is currently available from £260.96 a month.
Premium moves up to 17-inch alloy wheels and adds a leather-style heated multifunction steering wheel, heated front seats, a 360-degree parking camera with transparent chassis view, and rear privacy glass. It also brings an electrically adjustable driver's seat, wireless phone charging, ambient lighting and power-folding door mirrors, with 158 bhp in its entry version.
The Premium is currently available from £290.58 a month. Against the Comfort, that is currently £29.62/mo more expensive.
