The Mercedes S-Class was revamped in 2018, which brought in new eight-cylinder 4.0 litre diesel and petrol engines - and the excellent 12-cylinder 6.0 litre engine was retained. The bi-turbo petrol and diesel units deliver torque of 710 Nm with a power output of 612 hp. This helps the S-Class to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.3 seconds. Fuel economy is around 42 mpg with emissions of 158g/km. A plug-in hybrid capable of travelling 30 miles on battery power will also be introduced.
Equipment and handling
The Mercedes S-Class offers a luxurious and refined cabin that impresses and the semi-autonomous driving technology also helps to boost comfort and confidence when driving - including remote parking assist and active speed limit assist. There's also active cruise control and a system that links the comfort offerings, including ambient lighting and climate control and also the fragrance and massaging functions to create a specific wellness set-up that will match the driver's needs or mood. The S-Class is available as either a saloon, coupe, cabriolet or the impressive Maybach. Behind the wheel, all of the models deliver a supple and engaging drive thanks to the suspension and electric steering. There are two new high-resolution 12.3-inches touchscreen displays which are placed under one shared glass cover to create a widescreen cockpit. There are also touch sensitive controls placed in the steering wheel and respond to hand swiping motions so drivers can control the entire infotainment offering without taking their hands from the steering wheel. It goes without saying that the equipment list is impressively long which makes the S-Class a refined and well-designed luxury car.
