Leasing a BMW 7 Series

Engines and performance for the BMW 7 Series

Relaunched in 2019, the BMW 7 Series features petrol and diesel engines along with a petrol-electric hybrid with a 36 miles all-electric range. The engines have six, eight or 12 cylinders and are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. The entry-level diesel model produces 265hp and will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds and then onto a top speed of 155 mph. Economy is around 44 mpg. The quickest 7 Series is the BMW M760Li xDrive with a 6.6 litre engine producing 585hp and a sprint time of just 3.8 seconds, which pitches it against well-known sports cars despite the size and weight. Fuel economy is 22 mpg. The hybrid 7 Series offers a claimed fuel economy of 134mpg and emissions of 48g/km.

Equipment and handling

The BMW 7 Series is now in its sixth generation and it is an excellent luxury saloon offering. The exterior styling has been made bold to help it stand out against its rivals. There's an impressive infotainment system and a tablet that rear seat passengers can use for controlling the interior features such as the climate control. The 7 Series is available as either a standard offering or in long wheelbase with the rear seats giving lots of room for tall adults. The car's suspension delivers a comfortable drive with rough roads being smoothed out. There is BMW's excellent iDrive system offering a 10-inch infotainment screen featuring DAB radio, Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity. There is also wireless phone charging. The interior is impressive with chrome accents and dark-gloss wood trim. Despite its size, the BMW 7 Series is an easy car to manoeuvre around town, aided with rear wheel steering to boost the turning circle, and it's an excellent motorway cruiser. The interior is near-silent and the suspension copes well on winding country roads with little in the way of body roll. A digital instrument cluster replaces the analogue instrument dials and there's a very good semi-autonomous driving function. The diesel engines will probably be the favoured option, though the new plug-in hybrid is worth a closer look. Drivers will get to enjoy a 0 to 62 mph sprint time of 5.1 seconds and it is a sound alternative for those who may be motoring more around town. The electric only range is between 32 and 36 miles and the 7 Series will drive in all-electric mode at speeds of up to 68 mph. With its all-round great handling and stability, the 7 Series delivers a comfortable and cosseted ride and the car is packed with technology and equipment. The eight-speed automatic transmission is a smooth offering and many drivers should consider the parking assistant plus option that gives a 360° view of the car and its surroundings. Essentially, the BMW 7 Series is a cracking flagship saloon packed with luxury and equipment - but it's also easy and rewarding to drive and for those whose budget will extend to this car, then it's an impressive and practical choice.
