For anyone looking for luxury and safety in an impressive package, the S-Class will deliver on all fronts. The car is packed with technology and its performance also impresses.
This is a big car which needs big engines and fortunately Mercedes makes some of the best with its 3.0litre V6 diesel offering excellent levels of performance. Owners also get to enjoy petrol and diesel-hybrids which offer better economy and a very impressive 6.0 litre twin turbocharged V12 that produces 620bhp and will power the S-Class from 0 to 62 mph in just over four seconds. Considering the size and weight of the car, that's an impressive level of performance. There's also a slightly smaller twin turbo 5.5litre V8 which will do the same sprint in a similar time with better fuel economy; both petrol engines are limited to 155 mph. Of the hybrids, the Mercedes S500e should return 100 mpg with emissions of 65g/km. All of the engines are very good and deliver reasonable economy though the petrol units return between 24mpg and 34mpg with the diesels delivering around 49mpg and excellent performance.
With so much technology on board, the Mercedes S-Class is a true showcase for what the car maker can do; there's an impressive pedestrian detection system which will see people in the road at night and which will detect objects in the road. There's also driver drowsiness detection and an automated braking system that will kick-in should the vehicle sense an imminent collision. There's also an active suspension system available as an option with the automatic mode delivering a supple and agile drive and is excellent on rough roads with lumps and bumps ironed out. The sport mode is more dynamic with a system firmed-up.
The S-Class is packed with standard equipment and an impressive level of luxury, even for the entry level model which comes with air suspension, satnav and two 12inch high resolution screens. The cabin is comfortable and interesting with lights which consist of LEDs and with the long wheel base version, the back seats can be reclined to an almost horizontal position and options to choose which of the many seating arrangements for the front seat passenger and driver would require. Even at high speed, the Mercedes S-Class is a very quiet car but it delivers impressive levels of handling which make it the best in class by some distance.
