The Mercedes-Benz S Class is the company's flagship saloon, the car that sits above everything else Mercedes-Benz builds and the one that traditionally gets its newest engineering first. It exists to cover long distances quietly, whether you're driving or being driven.

It's a five-seat, four-door saloon, roughly 5.31 metres long, so it suits executives, chauffeur work and anyone who racks up motorway miles and wants to arrive unruffled. Parking is helped by four-wheel steering, fitted to every version.

About the Mercedes-Benz S Class

The current S Class is the seventh generation of a car that has been the reference point for large luxury saloons for decades, and it's on sale in this form since 2026. Reviewers consistently praise the hush of the cabin, the quality of the materials and the sheer ease of covering distance in it.

The common criticism is the screen-led interior: road testers note that almost everything runs through the central display and the steering wheel controls, which takes acclimatisation. Practically, you get five seats, a boot of between 305 and 510 litres depending on the version, and a 3-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.

Why lease a Mercedes-Benz S Class?

Because the equipment you'd want is already there. Every S Class has adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, an opening panoramic roof, heated front seats with electric memory adjustment, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging and built-in navigation.

Driver assistance is thorough across the range: blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam and autonomous emergency braking, plus front and rear parking sensors. Which S Class powertrain is right for me?

Two choices: a 3-litre diesel or a plug-in hybrid. The diesel is the straightforward long-distance option, the plug-in hybrid asks you to charge it but opens up the far more powerful versions. Both are automatic.

Diesel

The 3-litre diesel produces 309 bhp and 650 Nm, drives all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic and reaches 62 mph in 5.4 seconds. No plugs, no charging routine, a 76-litre tank and the biggest boot in the range at 510 litres. If you drive long motorway miles, start here.

Plug-in hybrid

The plug-in hybrid spans 429 to 791 bhp, with all-wheel or rear-wheel drive depending on version, and a battery of 10.4 to 22.0 kWh. Charging is at up to 11 kW, with a full charge in 2.3 hours on the best version. Boot space drops to between 305 and 345 litres.

Which S Class trim should I choose?

AMG Line is the everyday S Class; AMG Touring and AMG Night Edition are the 791 bhp performance versions. All three come with leather upholstery.

AMG Line

AMG Line starts at 309 bhp with all-wheel drive, on 20-inch AMG Cross Spoke alloy wheels. It brings LED headlights, hard disc navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sliding sunroof and a flat-bottomed nappa leather sports steering wheel, plus dual-zone climate control, privacy glass, adaptive suspension and power-folding mirrors.

The AMG Line is currently available from £1,236.00 a month.

AMG Touring

Now the performance versions. AMG Touring is the 791 bhp plug-in hybrid: 21-inch AMG Multispoke forged alloys, an MBUX augmented reality head-up display, a parking package with 360-degree camera, wireless rear phone charging, massaging and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, four-zone climate control and air suspension.

The AMG Touring is currently available from £3,167.23 a month.

AMG Night Edition

AMG Night Edition shares the 791 bhp plug-in hybrid running gear and all-wheel drive, on 21-inch AMG Cross Spoke alloys. It's an appearance-led take on the AMG Touring rather than an equipment upgrade, so choose it on looks.

The AMG Night Edition is currently available from £3,167.23 a month. Against the AMG Touring, that is currently £0.00/mo more expensive.

Mercedes-Benz S Class FAQs

It depends which version you choose. The diesel has 510 litres with the rear seats up, while plug-in hybrid versions carry between 305 and 345 litres because the battery sits under the boot floor. Roof load is 100 kg.

It will still drive without charging, but you lose the point of it. Charging runs at up to 11 kW, and the best version takes 2.3 hours from 0 to 100%. If you can plug in overnight at home, it makes sense; if you can't, the diesel is the easier car to live with.

It's a large car at 5.31 to 5.34 metres long and 1.92 metres wide, 2.11 to 2.12 metres across the mirrors. Four-wheel steering and a 12.4-metre turning circle help a lot, as do the 360-degree camera and parking sensors fitted to every version. Multi-storey car parks still need care.

Mercedes-Benz covers the car for 3 years with unlimited mileage, which suits high-mileage lease drivers. There's a 3-year paintwork guarantee and a 30-year anti-corrosion guarantee. Plug-in hybrid batteries are covered for 6 years or 62,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of capacity.

Servicing is due every 15,500 miles. Worth knowing when you set your contract mileage, because a high-mileage driver will see more services inside a three or four-year term. Adding a maintenance package to the lease spreads that cost into the monthly rental.
