The Mercedes-Benz G Class is a five-seat luxury off-roader with a shape nobody mistakes for anything else. It sits at the top of Mercedes-Benz's SUV line-up as the brand's serious off-road 4x4, rather than a road-biased family car with raised suspension.
It suits buyers who want genuine off-road hardware wrapped in a very expensive-feeling cabin, and who don't mind that a boxy 4x4 will never be discreet. Reviewers consistently rate its off-road ability and cabin quality, while noting it leans more in corners than road-focused rivals and takes some care to park.
The choice is simple enough: one SUV body, three powertrains (petrol, diesel and electric), and a run of trims from Professional Line up to the editions and the AMG.

The G Class is a five-seat, five-door luxury 4x4 sold in the current second-generation form since 2025. It pairs serious all-terrain engineering with a leather-lined, tech-heavy interior.
Its shape dates back to the late 1970s, and Mercedes-Benz has deliberately kept the round headlamps, bonnet-top indicators and clunk-shut doors that road testers still single out.
Practically, you get 555 to 640 litres of boot space with the rear seats up depending on version, and petrol and diesel models tow up to 3,500 kg braked. Every G Class carries a 3-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty and the range holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
Because the standard specification is genuinely complete, so you rarely need to chase options. Every G Class has all-wheel drive, an automatic gearbox, leather upholstery, an electric sunroof, heated front and rear seats, three-zone climate control and built-in navigation with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Driver-assistance kit is standard too: adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, self-steering parking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and autonomous emergency braking. That Euro NCAP result breaks down as 90% for adult occupants and 83% for children.
Servicing falls every 12 months or 15,500 miles, and a full-size spare is fitted. If you're weighing spec against monthly cost, our guide to choosing your car is a sensible read before you order.
Three choices: petrol, diesel or electric. All are automatic and all drive through four wheels, so the decision comes down to how far you travel, whether you can charge, and how much noise you want.
Petrol models run from 443 bhp to 577 bhp, with a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. WLTP economy is 19.1-25.2 mpg, so this is the choice for character rather than running costs. Braked towing is 3,500 kg.
The 3-litre diesel makes 362 bhp and 750 Nm, with WLTP economy of 30.7-31.7 mpg - the most frugal way into the range. It'll tow 3,500 kg braked and reaches 62 mph in 5.8 seconds. The pick if you cover real distance.
The electric G Class has a 117 kWh battery, 579 bhp and a WLTP range of up to 291 miles, so it needs charging. A 10-80% top-up takes 29 minutes at 200 kW on the best version, or 12 hours from a 11 kW home charger. Our electric car guide covers the basics.

Professional Line already covers the essentials, so the rest of the range is mostly about wheels, cabin materials and how loud you want the car to look.
The entry point, with the 362 bhp diesel, 18-inch five-spoke alloys and leather upholstery. Standard kit includes MBUX augmented reality navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electric sliding sunroof, a leather dashboard and electrically adjustable heated front seats. Automatic high beam is a factory option.
The Professional Line is currently available from £1,842.08 a month.
Also diesel-based at 362 bhp, this adds multibeam LED headlamps with adaptive highbeam assist plus, plus a heated steering wheel. Wheels step up to 20-inch AMG five twin-spoke alloys, and ventilated front seats can be added as an option. Deals for it come and go, so ask our team what's live.
The same equipment on the petrol side, starting at 443 bhp: multibeam LED headlamps with adaptive highbeam assist plus, a heated steering wheel, 20-inch AMG five twin-spoke alloys and leather upholstery, with ventilated front seats optional. Availability changes, so speak to us if it isn't showing below.
Built around the 577 bhp petrol engine, the Carbon Edition is about appearance rather than extra equipment, riding on 22-inch cross-spoke alloys with leather upholstery. Ventilated front seats remain an option.
The Carbon Edition is currently available from £3,199.78 a month. Against the AMG, that is currently £154.56/mo more expensive.
An edition of the same 577 bhp petrol car that adds an AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather, and makes ventilated front seats standard rather than optional. Wheels stay at 22 inches in the cross-spoke design.
The Manufaktur Edition is currently available from £3,285.91 a month. Against the Carbon Edition, that is currently £86.14/mo more expensive.
The Magno Edition is a styling exercise on top of the Manufaktur Edition, so the equipment list is unchanged: 577 bhp petrol power, 22-inch cross-spoke alloys and leather trim.
The Magno Edition is currently available from £3,311.36 a month. Against the Manufaktur Edition, that is currently £25.45/mo more expensive.
Then there's the performance G Class. The AMG uses the 577 bhp petrol engine and adds the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather and the AMG instrument cluster with dual bonded 12.3-inch widescreen displays, along with adaptive suspension. It's the theatrical one.
The AMG is currently available from £3,045.22 a month.
If you like the idea but not the shape, the Land Rover Defender covers similar ground, while the Land Rover Range Rover and Land Rover Range Rover Sport lean more luxury. The Audi RS Q8 is the road-focused alternative. Browse the full Mercedes-Benz range too.
