About the Mercedes-Benz EQE

The EQE is Mercedes-Benz's electric take on the executive car: five seats, a boot of 430 to 520 litres depending on body style, and a 3-year unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.

Reviewers consistently praise the refinement - the soundproofing, the near-silent motors and the long-distance composure all come up again and again in road tests. The same testers are less kind about the styling, which is deliberately aerodynamic rather than dramatic, and some find cabin materials inconsistent in places for a car of this class.

Safety is a strong point: Euro NCAP awarded the EQE five stars, with adult occupant protection scored between 87% and 95%.

EQE body styles

Two shapes, same mechanical package. The saloon is the sleeker, lower-slung option with a conventional boot; the SUV gives you a higher driving position, more rear-seat room and a bigger, more usable load area. Both seat five.

EQE Saloon

The saloon measures 4.95-4.96m long with a 430-litre boot behind the rear seats. Its low roofline and one-bow profile help efficiency.

EQE SUV

The SUV is shorter overall at 4.86-4.88m but taller, with 520 litres of boot space rising to 1,675 litres with the rear seats folded, five doors, and braked towing of up to 1,800kg on the strongest versions.

Which EQE powertrain is right for me?

There's one powertrain across the range - electric - but it spans a wide spread of power and range, so the version you pick matters more than the fuel type.

Electric

A 90-96kWh battery, 315-617bhp, automatic, and rear- or all-wheel drive depending on version. WLTP range runs from 259 to 428 miles; rapid charging takes 31 minutes from 10-80% at 170kW on the best version, and a 22kW home or workplace supply fills the battery in 4.8 hours. Which EQE trim should I choose?

Four everyday trims and one performance version, and the differences are mostly wheels, upholstery, lighting and driver assistance rather than anything mechanical.

Sport Edition

The starting point: 20-inch Multi Spoke alloy wheels, static LED headlights with high beam assist, wireless smartphone integration and Artico man-made leather, plus heated front seats, a digital instrument cluster, a heat pump, climate control and privacy glass. It's 315bhp and rear-wheel drive. The Sport Edition is currently available from £1,089.78 a month.

AMG Line Edition

Over the Sport Edition this brings 19-inch AMG 5 Twin Spoke alloys, leather upholstery and front sports seats, with air suspension available as a factory option. Also 315bhp and rear-wheel drive. The AMG Line Edition is currently available from £1,181.15 a month. Against the Sport Edition, that is currently £91.37/mo more expensive.

AMG Line

A bigger jump. Against the Sport Edition it adds 21-inch AMG Multi Spoke alloys, static LED headlights, a panoramic sliding sunroof, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and start, electric seat memory, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking. A retractable towbar is optional. The AMG Line is currently available from £1,188.20 a month. Against the Sport Edition, that is currently £98.42/mo more expensive.

AMG Line Night Edition

An edition of the AMG Line, mostly about darker detailing and lighting. It adds 19-inch AMG 5 Twin Spoke alloys, digital HD LED headlights with projection and adaptive high beam plus, a panoramic sunroof with remote opening and ventilation, a heated steering wheel, heat pump, privacy glass and front sports seats. Ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and air suspension are options. The AMG Line Night Edition is currently available from £1,242.28 a month. Against the AMG Line, that is currently £54.07/mo more expensive.

Then there's the performance EQE.

AMG Night Edition

This is the 617bhp car, all-wheel drive, with rapid acceleration typical of the range. Over the AMG Line it adds 20-inch AMG 5-Twin Spoke alloys, digital light LED headlights with projection, MBUX augmented reality navigation, AMG Nappa leather, a heated steering wheel, head-up display, 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats and four-wheel steering. The AMG Night Edition is currently available from £1,726.78 a month. Against the AMG Line, that is currently £538.57/mo more expensive.
