Overview of the Mercedes-Benz E Class

Excellent luxury saloon

Lots of space and equipment

The Mercedes E-Class offers a spacious and luxury saloon that is comfortable to drive and is packed with equipment. There's also a new plug-in hybrid available and a coupe and cabriolet have been added to the line-up.

Engines and performance for the Mercedes E-Class

There's a wide choice of engines available for the Mercedes E-Class, including an excellent 2.0 litre diesel engine and a 4.0 litre V8 twin-turbo petrol unit that delivers impressive levels of performance from its astounding 604bhp. The 2.0 litre petrol unit produces 184 hp while the diesel engine delivers 194 hp and better economy. It's also a smooth and quiet diesel delivering decent performance on motorways while returning 52 mpg. The petrol-electric hybrids offer a nice alternative with an all-electric driving range of 30 miles with the electric motor helping to boost the overall power and performance. Mercedes says the hybrid will deliver around 134 mpg, which will make this offering more appealing.

Equipment and handling

The Mercedes E-Class offers a lot of equipment with an impressive standard specification including widescreen cockpit, touchpad with controller, split folding rear seats and illuminated door sills. There's also blind spot assist and a parking package which includes parking sensors and there are 18-inch alloy wheels. The AMG Line offering adds exterior body styling, comfortable leather upholstery and ash wood trim as well as privacy glass and an AMG steering wheel. There's a lot of space in the cabin, particularly in the rear for tall adults and the optional air suspension delivers a smooth drive, though the E-Class is enjoyable around town and on long motorway journeys. The Estate variant offers an impressive 640 liters of capacity putting some other German estates to shame. Essentially, for those wanting comfort and luxury, the Mercedes E-Class does this very well and delivers a car that's great to drive with the addition of self-driving technology helping to boost relaxation levels.
