The Volvo S90 is an executive saloon that impresses. More importantly, it's a premium offering that's an interesting alternative to many of its rivals.
The Volvo S90 comes with a choice of 2.0 litre diesel D4 or D5 engines with the former producing 188 bhp and the latter offering 232 bhp; they are both strong performers and offer lots of torque which is delivered when needed. A petrol-electric hybrid version of the car producing 402 bhp will be available at some point. The diesel engines deliver economy ranging from 58 mpg to 64 mpg, which is quite impressive for the size and weight of the car though the engines are also mated to an impressive eight-speed automatic transmission. There's also the option of four-wheel-drive.
As should be expected, out on the road the Volvo S90 is a relaxing and safe executive car to drive; the interior is very comfortable and over long motorway journeys, there is little that can beat it.
There's also a lot of equipment on board including a 9-inch touchscreen, a well-designed satnav system and a good sound system too. However, Volvos are renowned for their safety features and that's the case with the S90; there is also a new automatic braking system that operates when it detects an obstruction in the road and an autonomous driving system that operates at speeds of up to 80 mph.
The interior is not only comfortable it is also typically Volvo with lots of wood and leather to make it a premium looking and attractive interior. The seats are also, as usual, very comfortable too. The boot size is a useful 500 litres and there's plenty of storage dotted around the cabin as well. Behind the wheel, the car is easy to drive despite its dimensions and the suspension works well, particularly around town and when cornering at speed.
Essentially, the Volvo S90 is a luxurious executive saloon that is packed with safety features and delivers an impressive ride; it's up against strong German rivals but it's worth considering as a stylish and more comfortable alternative.
