The BMW 5 Series is BMW's large executive car: a five-seat saloon or estate that sits above the 3 Series and below the 7 Series, built for people who cover serious motorway miles in comfort. The current 5 Series, the eighth generation, has been on sale in this form since 2024.

It suits company car drivers, long-distance commuters and families who want space without an SUV. At 5.06 metres long it's a big car - excellent on a motorway, less relaxing in a multi-storey.

The choice is straightforward: saloon or estate body, a 2-litre turbo petrol or a plug-in hybrid, and two trims, M Sport and M Sport Pro.

About the BMW 5 Series

The 5 Series has been BMW's executive saloon for over half a century. Reviewers consistently praise its motorway refinement, its interior quality and the fact that it still steers and handles like a BMW despite the extra size.

The common criticisms are its sheer bulk on narrow roads and an infotainment system that moves functions like climate control onto the screen, although the rotary controller on the centre console survives.

Every version seats five and carries 520 litres in the saloon or 570 litres in the estate with the rear seats up. BMW's warranty runs to three years with unlimited mileage, and Euro NCAP awarded the 5 Series five stars.

5 Series body styles

Two shapes, same car underneath. The saloon is the classic executive four-door with a separate boot; the estate adds a tailgate and a longer load area. Both measure 5.06 m long on a 3.00 m wheelbase, and both seat five.

Saloon

The four-door saloon carries 520 litres with the rear seats up and gives the cleanest, lowest-slung look of the two. Choose it if your load is luggage and briefcases rather than dogs, bikes or flat-pack furniture.

Estate

The five-door estate takes 570 litres seats-up and 1,700 litres folded, plus a roof load limit of 100 kg rather than the saloon's 75 kg.

Why lease a BMW 5 Series?

Because the standard kit list is generous across the whole range, and leasing keeps you in a car whose technology dates quickly. Every 5 Series gets a 360-degree camera, heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation and a digital instrument cluster.

On safety, every version has autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, self-steering parking and automatic high beam. Euro NCAP scored it five stars, with 89% for adult occupant protection and 78% for safety assist.

Practical points matter on a lease too: braked towing runs up to 2,000 kg depending on version, and there's a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel, which is worth knowing before you order.

Which 5 Series powertrain is right for me?

Two choices: a 2-litre turbo petrol, or a plug-in hybrid you charge from a socket. Both use an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the decision mostly comes down to whether you can plug in regularly.

Petrol

The 2-litre turbo petrol produces 205 bhp, drives the rear wheels through an automatic gearbox and needs no charging at all. WLTP economy is 42.8-48.7 mpg with CO2 of 131-141 g/km, and 0-62 mph takes 7.5-7.8 seconds. It's the simple answer if you can't charge at home.

Plug-in hybrid

The plug-in hybrid pairs petrol power with a 22.1 kWh battery (19.0-19.4 kWh usable), giving 295-482 bhp and rear- or all-wheel drive. Charging is AC only at up to 11 kW, with the best version going 0-100% in 2.3 hours. Worth it if you plug in most nights; less so if you won't.

Which 5 Series trim should I choose?

There are two trims, M Sport and M Sport Pro, and both are well equipped. The differences are wheels, a little extra hardware and the look of the car, rather than a step up in comfort or safety kit.

M Sport

M Sport brings adaptive LED headlights, a wireless charging tray, an ambient lighting pack and electrically adjustable door mirrors, on 19-inch "Double Spoke Style 935 M" alloys with leather and artificial leather upholstery. It also has lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, dual-zone climate, sports suspension and front sports seats.

The M Sport is currently available from £632.11 a month.

M Sport Pro

M Sport Pro adds launch control over M Sport and moves to 20-inch "Star Spoke Style 938 M" alloys, again with leather and artificial leather upholstery. Both trims offer the same options: head-up display, fixed panoramic glass roof, heated steering wheel, powered tailgate, privacy glass, fixed towbar and adaptive suspension.

The M Sport Pro is currently available from £664.22 a month. Against the M Sport, that is currently £32.11/mo more expensive.

Optional packs sit on top of either trim rather than replacing them: the Tech Plus Pack adds the technology plus pack with Parking Assistant Professional, and there's a Comfort Plus Pack, with combined Tech Plus/Comfort Plus versions also offered. BMW 5 Series FAQs

Yes, for families of up to five. It scored 85% for child occupant protection in its five-star Euro NCAP assessment, and boot space runs from 520 litres in the saloon to 570 litres in the estate with the rear seats up. The estate is the more useful shape with a pushchair.

It will drive without charging, but you lose the point of it. The 22.1 kWh battery charges on AC at up to 11 kW, with the best version taking 2.3 hours from 0-100%. If you have no home or workplace charger, the petrol makes more sense.

It can. Braked towing capacity is 1,800-2,000 kg depending on the version, with 750 kg unbraked. A fixed towbar is a factory option on both M Sport and M Sport Pro, so specify it at order stage rather than trying to add one to a leased car later.

BMW covers the car for three years with unlimited mileage, which is useful if you're taking a high-mileage lease. The plug-in hybrid's battery has its own cover of eight years or 100,000 miles. Servicing isn't included unless you add maintenance to your agreement.

It's 5.06 m long and 1.90 m wide, or 2.16 m across the mirrors, with a turning circle of 11.7-11.8 m. Road testers regularly note that it feels large in town. A 360-degree camera and self-steering parking are standard, which helps in tight car parks.
