The Mercedes-Benz C Class Estate is the practical shape of Mercedes-Benz's compact executive car: five seats, five doors, a boot of 320 to 490 litres depending on version, and a cabin lifted almost wholesale from far pricier models in the range.

It sits below the E Class Estate and above the smaller cars in the line-up, and it is aimed at drivers who want a comfortable, quiet motorway car that still swallows dogs, buggies and luggage without turning into an SUV.

The choice here is simple enough: one body style, three powertrains (petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid), two everyday trims in AMG Line and Urban Edition, and two 671 bhp AMG S editions above them.

About the Mercedes-Benz C Class Estate

This is the fifth-generation C Class, on sale in this form since 2022. It is a five-seat premium estate with a 3-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty, a 5-star Euro NCAP rating and up to 490 litres of boot space with the rear seats up.

Reviewers consistently praise the ride comfort, the motorway refinement and an interior that looks and feels a class above, while noting the C Class is stable rather than thrilling on a twisty road and that the touchscreen takes learning. Fold the rear seats and you get up to 1,510 litres, though plug-in hybrid versions give up some of that space to their battery.

C Class Estate or C Class Saloon?

The Estate is the one to have if you carry things. It offers 320 to 490 litres with the rear seats up against the C Class Saloon's 280 to 455 litres, plus a tailgate, roof rails and up to 1,510 litres with the seats folded.

Why lease a Mercedes-Benz C Class Estate?

Because the standard equipment is genuinely generous and the safety kit is complete across the range. Every C Class Estate has heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, a powered tailgate, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging and built-in navigation.

Every version also gets a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control, ambient lighting, roof rails and paddle shifters. On safety, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring on most trims, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, self-steering parking and automatic high beam are all standard, which helps explain the 5-star Euro NCAP result (93% adult occupant, 89% child occupant).

Servicing falls every 12,500 to 15,500 miles, and there's a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel, worth knowing if you do a lot of rural miles.

Which C Class Estate powertrain is right for me?

All three are automatic, all three use a 9-speed gearbox, and the right one mostly depends on your annual mileage and whether you can plug in at home or work.

Petrol

The petrol runs from 201 to 415 bhp using 1.5 and 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive available. WLTP economy is 30.1 to 44.1 mpg and CO2 145 to 214 g/km, so it suits lower-mileage drivers who never want to think about charging.

Diesel

The 2-litre diesel gives 194 to 261 bhp, rear-wheel drive, and 440 to 550 Nm of torque, which is what makes it feel effortless when loaded. WLTP economy of 54.3 to 61.4 mpg and CO2 from 122 g/km make it the sensible pick for high motorway mileage.

Plug-in hybrid

The plug-in hybrid pairs a 2-litre turbo with a 25.4 kWh battery (4.8-19.5 kWh usable) for 309 to 671 bhp, rear- or all-wheel drive. It needs regular charging to make sense: the best version takes 10-100% in about two hours at 11 kW. Boot space drops to 320-360 litres. Which C Class Estate trim should I choose?

Four trims: two everyday choices and two AMG S editions. Each is a different set of wheels, materials and driver aids rather than a different car underneath.

AMG Line

AMG Line brings hard disc navigation, smartphone integration, heated front seats, a parking package with reversing camera, and a dashboard, instrument panel and beltlines finished in ARTICO man-made leather in nappa look. It rides on 18-inch AMG 5 Spoke alloys with sports suspension, front sports seats, seat memory, blind-spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition. Entry version: 201 bhp, rear-wheel drive.

Urban Edition

Urban Edition is the plug-in hybrid trim, starting at 309 bhp with rear-wheel drive. Over AMG Line it adds an electric panoramic glass sunroof that opens, Artico man trim and ambient lighting. Wheels stay at 18-inch AMG 5 Spoke, upholstery is artificial leather.

Above those sit the two AMG S editions, both 671 bhp plug-in hybrids with all-wheel drive.

AMG S Night Edition

This is the full-power C Class: 671 bhp, up to 1,020 Nm, 0-62 mph in 3.4 seconds. Over Urban Edition it adds 20-inch AMG Cross Spoke forged alloys in high-gloss black, digital light LED headlamps, MBUX augmented reality navigation, AMG Nappa leather, a 360-degree camera parking package, head-up display, hands-free tailgate, adaptive suspension and four-wheel steering. Adaptive cruise control, active lane-change assist and a retractable towbar are available as options.

AMG S Carbon Edition

Mechanically the same 671 bhp all-wheel-drive car, on the same 20-inch AMG Cross Spoke wheels. The difference is presentation rather than equipment, with AMG Artico man trim and an artificial leather interior, and the same option list including adaptive cruise control and a retractable towbar.
