The Ford Tourneo Connect is what happens when a leading manufacturer takes one of the best-made commercial vehicles available today and turns it into an MPV for the consumer market. The excellent Tourneo Connect has car-like handling, space and equipment to make this a serious choice for those wanting a durable and practical vehicle.
Drivers have a choice of two excellent diesel engines, Ford's 1.6litre TDCi Zetec with two power outputs of 94bhp and 113bhp. There's also the excellent 1.0 litre EcoBoost variant which is also a good performer in a vehicle of this size. The economy from the diesel engines ranges from 55 to 61 mpg, an excellent figure considering the size and weight of the Torneo Connect while the EcoBoost engine will return around 50 mpg. Ford also supplies a 1.6 litre petrol engine which produces 140bhp.
However, the real difference between the Ford Tourneo Connect and its nearest rivals is when out on the road when the similarities between the MPV and its sibling cars are plain to see. That's because they share very similar platforms and so the handling is car-like which isn't an approach shared by its rivals which simply convert a van into an MPV.
This also means that the Tourneo Connect is a comfortable drive over long journeys and it handles well on winding country roads though at speed the EcoBoost engine can struggle when the MPV is fully loaded. There's also some road noise at speed, mainly down to the big door mirrors but it's not too intrusive. Access to the rear seats is easy thanks to the sliding doors, a real boon in tight car parking spaces, and the interior has been designed to take a lot of punishment with extensive use of hard plastics and everything feels sturdy and well-made.
There's no getting away from the fact that this excellent vehicle is based on the Ford Transit Connect and the seats are where the loading space and bulkhead should be but for those who want reliability and a solid-build for their MPV should put the Tourneo Connect on their shortlist.
