View dealThe Ford Focus Hatchback is a five-door, five-seat family car built around one of the best-regarded chassis in its class. It's the sensible-sized alternative to a small SUV: low, easy to park, and genuinely good fun on a decent road.
Within Ford's car range it sits above the small crossovers and below the larger SUVs, aimed squarely at families, commuters and company drivers who want something that drives well without shouting about it.
The choice here is simple. One body style on this page, one petrol engine family in two power outputs with a manual or automatic gearbox, and three trims: ST-Line, Active X and ST-Line X.

This is the fourth-generation Focus, on sale in this form since 2021. It seats five, comes with a three-year or 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty, and carries a five-star Euro NCAP rating with 96% for adult occupant protection.
What reviewers consistently praise is the way it drives. Road testers have repeatedly rated the Focus as the sweetest-steering car in the mainstream hatchback class, with a precise manual gearbox and a chassis that stays composed whether you're crawling through town or pressing on across country.
The criticisms are consistent too: the cabin uses more hard plastic than some premium-badged rivals. Servicing is every 24 months or 18,000 miles, and there's a space saver spare rather than a sealant kit.
Both carry five people through five doors, so the real difference is what's behind the rear seats. The Hatchback is the lighter of the two, at 1,503-1,532 kg against the Focus Estate's 1,561-1,599 kg.
Choose the Hatchback if your loads are occasional and your parking is tight. Choose the Estate if the boot is the whole point - dogs, prams, bikes, flat-pack. You can see both together on the full Ford Focus range, or the wider Ford lease range if you're still weighing up models.
Because the standard kit list is strong enough that you don't have to chase options to get a well-equipped car. Every Focus Hatchback, whichever trim you pick, has built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control and DAB radio.
Safety and assistance are standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights and automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers and an electric parking brake. Euro NCAP awarded five stars, with 87% for child occupant protection and 75% for safety assist.
Keyless entry and start, privacy glass and power-folding door mirrors are fitted to every version as well, which takes a lot of the guesswork out of choosing a trim.
There's one engine to consider, in two states of tune, so the decision is really about gearbox and how much pace you want.
A turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol driving the front wheels, with a six or seven-speed gearbox depending on version - manual or automatic. Nothing to plug in and nothing to plan around: you fill it up and drive.
Performance runs from 8.4 to 10.2 seconds for 0-62 mph and a top speed of 124-129 mph, with WLTP economy of 50.4-54.3 mpg and CO2 of 119-125 g/km. Torque is 170-190 Nm, and insurance groups sit between 15 and 20.
The 123 bhp version is the everyday choice and feels livelier than the numbers suggest; go for the 153 bhp tune if you carry passengers or do regular motorway miles. Our team can talk you through which combinations are actually available to order at the moment.

Three trims, and because the core equipment is standard across all of them, you're choosing between comfort kit, wheels and suspension character rather than filling obvious gaps.
The entry version, from 123 bhp and front-wheel drive, on 17-inch "5 Spoke" alloy wheels with cloth upholstery. It has full fixed LED headlamps, keyless entry and start, privacy glass and sports suspension, which is what gives it the sharpest cornering balance in the range.
Options include adaptive cruise control, heated front seats and steering wheel, a rear-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, self-steering parking and an opening panoramic roof.
Active X moves to 18-inch "5 Spoke" alloys and adds the winter kit - heated front seats and a heated steering wheel - plus a wireless phone charging pad and a digital instrument cluster in place of the analogue dials. Upholstery stays cloth.
It also opens up a head-up display and matrix LED headlights on the options list, alongside adaptive cruise control, a rear-view camera and blind-spot monitoring.
ST-Line X keeps the Active X equipment and adds sports suspension, on 18-inch alloys in the "5x3 Spoke" style. It's the firmest-riding Focus of the three, which is exactly the point if you value body control over softness - worth a test drive if your local roads are poor.
The same options are available: head-up display, matrix LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, panoramic roof, parking camera and blind-spot monitoring. Paint choice across the range runs to eight colours, from Agate Black and Moondust silver to Fantastic red and Desert island blue.
If you're cross-shopping, the Volkswagen Golf and Peugeot 308 cover similar family-hatchback ground, the CUPRA Leon takes a sportier line, and the Škoda Scala is the practical, plainer-suited option.
